Food safety reforms pass in Senate

By Juliana Keeping

Momentum for change born from recalls of tainted eggs, spinach and peanut butter that sickened thousands has led to the most sweeping food-safety reforms in decades, multiple news outlets are reporting.

The L.A. Times reported the Senate passed a food-safety bill Tuesday that would result in tougher standards and federal inspections for the nation’s food supply. It now awaits reconciliation by the House on differing provisions. The House first passed the legislation in 2009.

The New York Times called bipartisan support of the bill “unusual.” It reports both versions of the bill would increase the Food and Drug Administration’s powers to oversee farming, call for accountability from food companies, recall tainted foods and increase inspections.

Part of the problem is the growing globalization and industrialization of the food industry, The Times said. The FDA inspects a miniscule amount of foods imported each year; the bill would give the FDA more oversight and regulatory powers over food imports and the way foods are grown abroad, according to The Times.

Well this is terrible news, bring on the tyranny. Don't you dare try to grow your own food, you can eat our GM garbage and buy our GM seeds, and buy our "license" to grow your own food. FDA = Monsanto + Big Pharma Now let's wait for the FCC to make their dramatic move before January, and that'll be another nail in our coffin.
