Free kidney screenings offered March 10 at University of Michigan Health Center
The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan will offer free kidney screenings to check for chronic kidney disease on March 10.
The event marks National Kidney Month and World Kidney Day. According to the National Kidney Foundation, more than 900,000 Michigan adults have chronic kidney disease.
In conjunction with the kidney screenings, the University of Michigan Health System will also offer free medical screenings for protein, weight, blood pressure and depression.
Chronic kidney disease is a condition in which damage to the kidneys over time causes waste to build in the blood stream. Complications from kidney disease can include high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones and nerve complications, according to the National Kidney Foundation.
Most cases are caused by diabetes and/or high blood pressure. Health assessments and lifestyle choices can prevent the disease. If left untreated, kidney disease requires dialysis or a kidney transplant.
The 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event is March 10 at the University of Michigan Health System, located at 1500 Medical Center Drive in Ann Arbor. The screenings will take place in the U-M Hospital Dow Auditorium Lobby, located on the 2nd floor of the Taubman Center, near the cafeteria.
