Looking for seasonal flu vaccine
Many people have been looking to get the seasonal flu shot - only to find their primary care provider is out of the supply.
To help, the American Lung Association has a flu clinic locator that allows visitors on its Web site to type in their zip code to get a list of planned local clinics.
Be careful about how up-to-date it is, though.
A search in the Ann Arbor area shows the flu shot available at the Walgreens at 3255 Washtenaw Ave. - even though an automated message for the store’s answering service says its currently out of the vaccine.
Have you found a place that still has the seasonal flu vaccine recently? Let us know and we’ll check it out.
Swine flu activity widespread
Flu activity is widespread in 48 states, including Michigan, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.
In a flu surveillance report posted on its Web site, the CDC said overall visits to doctors due to flu-like illness spiked last week in the U.S. and is at rates that are much higher than expected for this time of year. Total hospitalization rates for lab-confirmed flu are also higher than usual for this time of year.
Information about increased rates of flu-like illness has been reported in Washtenaw County schools, with one local school closing this week due to high absentee rates. The CDC has offered a toolkit of information for childcare providers as well as guidelines for K-12 schools. Check them out here and here.
Home flu preparedness
Is your home ready for H1N1? The Detroit News offered a collection of tips from the CDC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Ideas to get ready include storing a two-week supply of water and food in case you can’t make it to the store for a while, make sure your prescriptions are filled and keep extra nonprescription drugs on hand.
Lines get shorter for vaccine in parts of Michigan
Demand at some H1N1 vaccination clinics in Michigan is beginning to wane, one Michigan TV station is reporting.
ABC News 12, which reports in the Flint and Saginaw areas, says lines have been shrinking at some clinics in its coverage area. Supply is beginning to catch up to demand there as thousands more doses of the vaccine have been pegged to arrive each week.
A problem has arisen there though - some local health care providers are refusing to distribute the vaccine themselves as it becomes available because it involves too much paperwork, the station reports.
