How to pack for healthy eating on the go

By Melissa Gerharter MS, RD

This weekend marks the beginning of summer and for some of us summer can mean more travel to visit friends or go for a visit up North. How can we stay on track with eating well while we travel?

Eating well on the road is possible if we are prepared. Since the warm weather and lack of access to refrigeration can limit our selections in what we pack in our bags or cars below are some suggestions on what to pack.

• Oatmeal packed in small baggies. You will most likely be able to find hot water anywhere like an airport or gas station. • A package of whole grain crackers. I personally like Kashi brand crackers and their varieties are vastly expanding from garlic and herb to cheese flavored. • A mixture of nuts, seeds and dried fruits premeasured in several baggies to help with portion control. • A small jar of natural peanut butter • Apples and oranges • WATER

Having these snacks around can help satisfy hunger pangs without giving into airport food or fast food. What gets you through your road trip?
