Angil Tarach with Visiting Angels

It was our 100th Everything Elderly radio show this past weekend, and we were most pleased to have two good friends as guests on the program.

Angil Tarach is the owner of Visiting Angels, providing non-medical home care for seniors and disabled adults, allowing them to be safe and independent in their own homes. Angil is a registered nurse and has been working with seniors for 34 years. We know her as a strong and consistent advocate for the elderly. (Editor's note: Tarach has also been an occasional community contributor to AnnArbor.com.)

Angil has been writing articles about seniors and health care issues for several years. Not surprisingly, she is starting to get national attention, being solicited to write for various magazines and websites, such as the alzheimersreadingroom.com and nursetogether.com. She just sold an article to a national health magazine, You & Me. She is starting to write continuing education courses for nurses, and developing a new training program.

She has also been working on a book, “Behind the Old Face”. The book deals with how we tend to look at seniors as just old people. We often don’t think about their lives and their accomplishments. We don’t generally see elderly folks as complete whole people, and this problem is even worse if the senior has dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Angil advocates getting to know seniors as the individuals they truly are. It is very clear Angil really enjoys this aspect of her work.

We were very privileged to have Brian Royster, a financial advisor with Edward Jones back on the show. Brian's enthusiasm for his work is infectious, and it’s always good fun to speak with him.

Edward Jones has been around since 1922 and is very community-based, with 12,500 financial advisors serving their local areas. As a financial advisor, Brian is focused on helping people meet their financial goals, providing advice on financial matters to meet each individual’s objectives. Brian is even helping a 12 year old save for his first car.

Brian talks a lot about how we’re all different, with varying amounts to invest, with individual goals and with different appetites for risk. He works to address that uniqueness in each of his clients.

More generally, from an investment standpoint, Brian likes the “large cap, rising dividend” companies, such as Proctor and Gamble, McDonalds, and AT&T. He talks about “investing in businesses, not in the market”.

With companies that pay a consistent dividend, you may not need those dividend payments right now. In that case, you can reinvest that dividend in the same company, buying more shares. It’s a simple process to set up this automatic reinvestment.

Mutual funds are also good options, effectively providing a professional money manager to handle your investment.
