Check out the 2010 NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes May 15 & 16

By NARI of Southeast Michigan, a chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry

Don't miss the 2010 NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes this weekend, Saturday May 15 and Sunday May 16, from noon to 6 p.m. Eleven homes will be on display, providing an opportunity to see some of this area's most innovative home remodeling ideas. Tickets are $10, and are valid for both days.

This article in the remodeled home tour series completes our preview (be sure to check out the other articles if you missed some!).

Screened-in porch / kitchen remodel

Valley Builders began working with this Bardstown Trail homeowner to create a spacious screened-in porch with vaulted ceiling, skylights galore, custom screen panels and bead board interior, all set upon a “low maintenance” AZEK vinyl deck (with hidden fasteners — no ugly holes or slivers). Whether barbecuing or enjoying a quiet morning coffee with the local song birds, this is outdoor living at its best.

Remodeling efforts then continued inside in the kitchen. Michigan-made Pioneer custom cabinetry highlighted with Cambria quartz counter tops, sub-way tile back splash, glass doors, and new hardwood flooring all work together to refresh this home with the latest products. The final touches in this project were a remodeled powder room, restored slate foyer, and the green-friendly Marmoleum flooring in the laundry area.

Screened-in porch addition / front entrance remodel / exterior makeover

When this project began, the Huntington Place homeowner had a clear vision: Create an outside oasis in the form of a screened porch addition, redefine the functionality of the front stairway and transform a traditional ranch exterior into a clean and modern presence — while maintaining the perimeter exterior deck.

Forward Designers and Builders provided the perfect solution: the screened porch addition provides steps from the house onto an adjacent ridge capturing the best views and natural light provided by the site. The existing deck is utilized as circulation and creates separate exterior entrances. The result is a smooth transition from the inside of the house, rain or shine, and creates an “away space” with stunning views into the back yard.

The exterior makeover consists of a new front entry staircase, landscaping, custom metal railings and new color combinations. The result is a stunning, yet subtle, modern home exterior that matches the existing finely tuned modern interior. When you visit this location, ask about design drawings which showcase alternative design options. (What decisions would you have made?)

Kitchen and main level remodel / addition

See how the interior of a standard brick ranch can be completely remodeled and enlivened. This Belmont Road home has a reconfigured floor plan which is both functional and visually delightful with serpentine curves and long sightlines. Rochman Design-Build used several design tools for space planning — relocating the basement stairs, relocating the central chimney, and converting a screened porch into interior space.

The new center of the home is a light-filled kitchen which is open to the dining area. Maple cabinetry, maple flooring, white quartz countertops, sparkling glass tiles, and rich colored walls define this clean modern aesthetic. A unique divider was created between the kitchen and living room — a 3’ thick curved ‘monolith’ wall housing a see-through contemporary fireplace. Multiple skylights and curved soffits add interest, and copious cubbies in the mudroom and first floor laundry add functionality. Come and find your favorite detail.
