Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley ReStore sells to the stars, anyone looking for a bargain
When Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley’s ReStore opened more than three years ago, they expected to sell to do-it-yourselfers, Habitat families and anyone looking for a good deal on anything from used appliances to (yes!) the kitchen sink.
What they didn’t expect was to sell to the stars.
But since Hollywood began making movies in Michigan and Washtenaw County, the filmmaking industry has turned to ReStore, a 15,000-square-foot home improvement outlet of new and gently used donated building materials and furniture. Crews from “Harold and Kumar 3,” “Cedar Rapids” and “Youth in Revolt” have all shopped at ReStore, said Jackie Hermann, ReStore director.
Now, the Ann Arbor ReStore will be open even more hours. It extended its hours earlier this month to include Sundays, and will now be open seven days a week for shopping and donations. The store accepts donations from individuals and businesses of new and gently used building materials, tools, real wood furniture, appliances and more.
Crew for the third "Harold & Kumar" movie recently called ReStore looking for white cabinets that would match the ones from the first “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” movie, Hermann said. Makers of the movie “Flipped” came to ReStore for a 1960s-era dining room set, cabinets and a mailbox. “They wanted a beat-up garbage can we used for scraps and they bought us a new one,” she said. And “Youth in Revolt” bought wrought-iron fencing, 2-by-4s and shutters for their set.
And there’s an added bonus: Once filmmakers are done with their purchases, they often donate them back, Hermann said. They also donate studs and other building materials from deconstructed sets.
That makes good pickings for everyday shoppers. But area business also donate materials to ReStore: There’s a couple of sturdy wood benches stamped with the Buffalo Wild Wings logo, an antique apothecary cabinet from Dexter Pharmacy and a ornately carved wooden mirror from Bay Design.
And there are everyday items, from nails to refrigerators. There are kitchen cabinet sets (many made of golden oak popular from the 1980s), lighting fixtures, doors, paint, toilets and more. “No matter what income bracket you’re in, you can buy something here rather than retail and have excess money for something else. You can get a granite countertop for $100,” Hermann said.
While ReStore offers bargains on building materials and furniture and saves tons of debris from the landfill, it also generates unrestricted funds for Habitat, said Sarah Stanton, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley. ReStore sales are expected to raise $175,000 for this fiscal year, which ends June 30, she said.
The Huron Valley Habitat was established in 1989 and has built or renovated more than 85 homes in Washtenaw County. Habitat owners qualify for interest-free mortgages from Habitat, make modest down payments and put in at least 300 hours of sweat equity building their home. Habitat has shifted from building new homes to building and renovating homes.
Because it has become less expensive to buy and renovate than to build new, Habitat has been able to place a growing number of Washtenaw County families into homes in recent years. There were eight Habitat homes last year, 10 this year and 14 are expected next year, Stanton said. The increase is also, in part, due to the money raised through ReStore. “We knew we needed to do more,” she said. “We have a lot more families than we have homes.”

Yes, we are a true hidden gem in Ann Arbor. Aprill drive is located on the South side of Jackson Road, between Wagner and Zeeb- it runs right along side of the Nissian Car dealership.

This is a great place! I have donated many items and have shopped around a bit too. Would you guys please put up a map? It is a bit tough to find since it is tucked away behind auto dealers off Jackson Road. Here is a link to their web site. http://www.h4h.org/ Thanks for the piece.
