Maker Faire is coming - time to get your DIY on!

By Christy Howden

The Maker Faire is coming to The Henry Ford Museum this weekend. It promises to be an event for inspiring creativity. For example, do you love doing the Mentos in Diet Coke experiment to the delight of squealing children? See EppyBird, the guys who turned that idea into a business, create an entire fountain performance. A front row seat might not be advised for this show. ">

To create your own geyser, all you need is a 2-liter bottle of warm Diet Coke and Mentos and a piece of paper.

Step 1. Go outside and pick a clear spot that can get messy, and have the kids take a few steps back to admire the show from a distance. Step 2. Open up the Diet Coke and quickly add 3-4 Mentos. This is most easily done by creating a paper tube and using a business card to hold them in the tube. Once aligned above the 2-liter opening, pull the business card to release the Mentos Step 3. Get out of the way and watch in awe.

The more Mentos, the higher the geyser. Also note other types 2 liters of pop can be used, but diet pop is good choice since it will not make a sticky mess like a full sugar pop.

Christy Howden (co-owner of TaDaaStudio.com) will be offering a free make and take of transforming old T-shirts into shopping bags at The Maker Faire in the Automotive Hall of Fame so please stop and do a little DIY with machine sewing!

Lots of locals will definitely be there, including people from the A2 Mech Shop (http://www.a2mechshop.com/), a2geeks (http://a2geeks.org/display/geek/Home), and All Hands Active / The AHA! Shop (http://www.allhandsactive.com). We AHA'ers are bringing a cardboard castle, plus a variety of electronic doohickeys; come help us expand the castle! For some local individuals and groups who will be exhibiting, check out Dale Dougherty's Makers Dozen article (http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/07/makers_dozen.html). This is going to be AWESOME.

With all the cool things there are to say about Maker Faire and the things people create, and the whole energy behind it, you couldn't think of anything better to write about than Coke and Mentos??? How lame. I hope that some better coverage of the real thing appears this weekend.

I'd love to go, but $28 per adult is way too much for a one-day pass.
