Lions' game against Buccaneers blacked out
by Tom Kowalski
Thursday November 20, 2008, 2:45 PM
Because more than 6,500 tickets remained unsold by the 1 p.m. Thursday deadline, the Lions' game on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be blacked out on local television. It's the third straight blackout for the Lions -- ending a string of 50 straight sellouts at Ford Field.
There are still about 1,000 tickets left for Detroit's game against the Tennessee Titans on Thanksgiving. That game has to be sold out prior to 1 p.m. Monday to have the blackout lifted.
Someone will buy the thanksgiving game, but man, people don't have the cash. The lions are going to have to ask for a 700 billion dollar bailout. Ironic, as the team has bailed on fans a long time ago.
HIRE MILLEN
sellout every single game 50 straight
FIRE MILLEN
cant sell out any games-yet
and with the way the ford company is almost bankrupt, bet ya ford misses Millen big time. Guess there were tons of millen fans in detroit and now that hes gone people quit going to the games-- bet you Ford is considering bringing Millen back-probably will make many on this blog happy again.
Chief,
Easy on the peace pipe man! lol
Thanksgiving will be sold out since were playing the Titans. More than likely we'll be
0-11 and they will be 11-0. What a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving if you're a Titans fan! Gobble Gobble!
I'd snatch up those tickets but I'm saving my money for when the McRib comes back.
Such a sorry @$$ team and ownership. It's pretty sad that you can't even see your local team play on Thanksgiving. FORD, SELL THE TEAM! You should anyways since your company is almost bankrupt and this is the one asset you do have. After all the layoffs and the people without jobs, the one thing they do is watch football on Thanksgiving with their family. And now they can't even do that. I'm disgusted.
After working in the kitchen all morning on Thanksgiving, I don't think I can take a chance of watching the nauseous performance of the lions. I don't want to waste a good meal.
I was going to celebrate Thanksgiving alone with a case of Killians and thats still a bigger win than watching the Lions eat it this year.
I guess I don't understand the whole Blackout thing...but how can they blackout a game that will be nationally televised? that would be like blacking out a Playoff game or Monday Night Football...not that I'm comparing the Thanksgiving Day game to those...just saying I don't see how they can black that out...
If the Thanksgiving Game isn't blacked out I'm going to drink until I black out.
akaOTis...
can black out any game that is not sold out within I believe a 75 mile radius...The Thanksgiving game will sell out because someone will grab them...
The rest of you make laugh..go on a forum and talk about how bad the team, how you are not going to watch, and are glad that they blackout so you don't get sick from their performance..but you all seem to know what happen for the 3 hours they played on Sunday and ready to tear them a new one come Monday..so quit trying to hide behind you make believe curtain..deep down you don't want this team to blackout..if you really did not care..you would never be on this site..
tjd..
I am a michigan fan, at one time had season seats; used to go see a couple lions games each year just to see Barry play.
No longer live in Michigan, can't see either team play.
Both teams suck. I am glad that I cannot be witness to the losses. Can't see the games on tv either. The one game that was available here, I did not watch--can't stand to see my team get beaten.
Doesn't mean that I am still not a fan. I get my Lions fix right here..midst the bellyachin, armchair qb'ng, secondguessing name calling. Its true, my wife doesn't understand my addiction either.
Simply put:
When the fannies in the stands cover every seat, there is no incentive to put a better show on stage. To the Fords, its a business first, and if they win... bonus.
Yes I want them to lose,,, and lose pitiously, so that a football man will take over as gm... and give us a better product.
.. and in the meantime,,I'll input my desire to see the trenches filled with talented men; read the posts of other people with whom otherwise I might not have anything in common. We are fans.
Tom gets paid to do what many of these guys would do for the mere chance to get on the field and write,,,,guys with qualified opinions, like chief, willy, click, pope and wrfetish. So we wonder when he tells us what is redundant.
and so you know
Thanksgiving won't be blocked out because its thansgiving.
kevinchristy
Thank you for the kind words. I think the Lions will finish 6-10.
Not !!
damn, must be some kinda record; I said something nice about wrfetish twice in 24 hours. Can't have that,,,,
One thing is certain, I feel much the fool for believing that defense of the preseason,,,, and actually wondered if my 6-10 prediction was a little low.
and he wondered what was wrong with his 4 win prediction, as if it was too generous?
hahaha
thats why they play the games!
0-16
seriously...whats the record for consecutive losses in a row? Seems 14 is a little low.
draft Oher
stay away from what I figure to be the qb pick,,Tebow
I'm like thre rest of you in wanting to build the Oline and Dline before skill positions. But while I reflected on the Matt Ryan pick (I hated at the time), you can see how a GREAT skill player can form the foundation of a franchise).
Other than skill positions, what other changes took the Falcons from pathetic to pretty decent?
kevinchristy
I don't know the exact number, but the TB Yucks lost all 14 their first season and were well into their second season before they finally got a win.
Defense wins championships. We should draft all defense with the first 5 picks.
I'm tired of hearing about "value" in a draft pick. You'd have to go all the way back to Barry to find a good "value pick by this pathetic organization.
If we pick Oher he'll be the reincarnation of Tony Mandarich.

yeah,,,I wish I had bought that nfl almanac I saw at a garage sale last week. I'm pretty sure it would have had it in there...
And vsledge
atlanta added Michael Turner to give their qb a running game..
and to give him the ball John Abraham as a DE gives them excellent pressure up front.
hmmm
we have the runner
we have the receiver
might have the qb (culpepper/stanton)
need the DE
and a dominating LT (center?) might solidify the blocking..
...
is 14 in a row the record??? I'd really like to know....

I wondered who had the most consecutive losses so I figured it could be found on the net somewhere..
I ended up searching a site called wiki.answers.com for “ NFL most consecutive losses” and got this response:
In NFL history, the most consecutive losses is 26 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976 and 1977. Tampa Bay's first year in the NFL was 1976 and they lost all 14 games on the schedule. The following year they lost the first 12 games on the schedule before finally defeating the New Orleans Saints 33-14 for their first NFL victory.
seriously, who cares? With all thats going on in the world this should be of no concern to us...
click: the thanksgiving game has never not sold out. it will never not sell out.
People who purchased NFL Direct Ticket in the Detroit area should file a class action suit against the NFL to challenge their blackout rule. I"m sure it says in the fine print they have the right to do it but since Congress is already after the NFL about the NFL network it might help put some pressure on Goodell to change the blackout rule- a remnant from an archaic period on pro football history.
they've been playing the turkey game since before i was born, and it has never not sold out. how bad have the lions been during that 30 year span? pretty damn bad, right? so i really doubt that any amount of horrible-ness is going to keep people away. it's not a crystal ball, it's just the pure unadalturated genius that is me. don't be jealous, embrace my genius and clamor for a good spot to ride along, like a remora on a whale shark.
GOD DAMNIT!!!!! F'N FORD!!!!!!!!! Football is the only sport I care about and this krusty piece of yesterdays crap has taken MY FOOTBALL away from me!!!!!! I live in a sh house with no space, moneys tight and this pill of... of.. GOD DAMN YOU FORD!!!!!!! DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAKE A GOD DAMN CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
vsledge: turner the burner has been pretty good for them too. though i agree with the matt ryan idea, there isn't a player of that caliber in this draft.
It is with an uncertain certitude that I follow this team and harbor no hope to prognosticate from this knowledge. I yield to a higher power in these matters.
Wow. I get to see the game down here in Tampa Bay and you don't up there. This will be my first "opportunity" to see the Lions on anything other than a crappy webcast this year.
If you really want to see them on Thanksgiving, have faith. Those 1,000 will go by Monday.
WGAS/WGAF.
I like listening to Miller & Branstetter on the radio better. Although I do wish Mark Champion was still calling the games. Listening to him and Jim Branstetter fall apart in the fourth quarter along with the team was priceless. Gotta love it when your play-by-play guys don't even attempt to polish the turd your team left on the field.
Until recently blackouts were only reserved for the lousiest of teams... but... with the economy sputtering like it is I think it's going to become more and more common. You would think that with so much money... the NFL could ease up on this ancient rule.
Out here in Cali I never get to see the Lions except for Thanksgiving Day... they keep showing the giants and cowboys and skin games.
Dave Birkett's blog says the Lions and the Raiders are the ONLY teams in the NFL to have games blacked out this season.
TB 26 consecutive losses. We could probably make it. I dont think they will really go 0-16 though. They are just too bad to do anything perfect.
I just cant believe anybody would pay any amount of money to go watch this garbage they call the Lions. I can understand seeing opponents fans in the stands but Lions fans? Why? Especially on Thanksgiving when you can be home with family, save money and watch them get spanked on T.V.
I used to be a die-hard fan but I reached my breaking point a few years ago. I just laugh anymore.
0-16 baby!!
Pope..The thanksgiving day game has not always been a sellout, get your facts straight
wingsforlife...
you say you use to be a die hard Lions fan, and now your not....the only people that put themselve through countless hours of reading forums and articles then actually taking time to comment on them or only diehard or trolls..I could put my next paycheck on it..if the lions were to win the next regular season games in a row and did not hire anyone in the front office and kept in pat...all the Lions slappies would be out in full force..
The thanksgiving game will sell out, It may not have at one time in the past, but when? The first one ever at Tiger Stadium? the 80,000-plus seat Silverdome? Ford Field only holds 62,000. It wlii sell out.
Can anyone tell me why for the love of God, why didn't popeww's old man pull out? He should have been a BJ!!!
They can black out playoff games. It happened to the Lions when they hosted the Packers in the mid-1990's.
Black out! If it weren't for blackouts, popeww would never get laid.
