Jalen Rose: Chris Webber's relationship with 'Fab Five' teammates remains distant
Whether or not the Michigan basketball program ever recognizes the "Fab Five" again remains to be determined.
Regardless, though, the group's unofficial spokesman -- ex-guard Jalen Rose -- has always maintained the historic group of former Wolverines will be "brothers" forever.
But, apparently, brothers still don't speak quite as much as they used to.
Rose spoke with ESPN.com's Bill Simmons on Friday about his relationship with former Michigan forward Chris Webber, and says it's still not quite what it once was.
"I don't talk to him as much as I should, and it's actually disappointing," Rose said. "We've never had an argument, we've never had a disagreement, we've never had a beef. ... Sometimes people get older and they grow apart."
Webber's involvement in the Ed Martin scandal has kept him "disassociated" with the Michigan basketball program for the past 10 years, a period that is set to end in 2013.
Part of Michigan's sanctions due to the scandal involved the removal of the Fab Five's Final Four banners, and also has kept an asterisk next to Webber's name in all Michigan record books.
Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon has said he's not sure if Michigan will ever be able to replace the banners, but when the disassociation period ends, he's not opposed to honoring the famous group of former freshmen in some capacity.
But, apparently, some repairs need to be made between not only Rose and Webber -- but Webber, his former teammates and the university in general.
"I think that the timeout, and he may or may not ever admit this, I think that timeout really screwed him up emotionally," Rose said, referencing Webber's phantom timeout call in the 1993 NCAA championship game. "To the point where, he wanted to disassociate himself with the entire Michigan scenario, he wants to act like it never happened.
"And so a domino effect of that has been the relationships, with not just me, but with the other four members of the Fab Five. If we see each other today, we're going to love and hug it out like brothers. But did we go out and have a cold one last night? No. ... (But) that's my brother. That's my little brother."
Rose also says Webber's relationship with the late Martin -- a person Rose says he introduced Webber to -- has also hurt the duo's relationship.
