Live blog: No. 4 Michigan battles Kansas State for the NIT championship
NEW YORK --
Final: Michigan 71, Kansas State 57
-- Michigan wins its first holiday tournament since 1997 here in New York City. More in a bit.
Michigan 55, Kansas State 38
-- 7:56, second half
Beilein letting others get in the game a bit now, more Akunne and Horford. Glenn Robinson III is dangerously close to a double-double with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
Michigan 49, Kansas State 30
-- 10:58, second half
All Michigan, all the time right now. The Wolverines have outscored Kansas State 20-6 to start the second half. Tim Hardaway Jr. now has 20 points and 7 rebounds. As a team, Michigan is shooting 21 of 41 from the floor -- doing a bit of everything right now, and it's way too much for Kansas State.
Michigan 43, Kansas State 29
-- 13:35, second half
Tim Hardaway Jr. has been the man tonight for Michigan. He's got 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting, and five rebounds to go along with it. Trey Burke has gotten on the scoreboard, too (nearly dunking), and Michigan opens the half on a blistering 14-3 run to go up by as many as 15. Wolverines seem to have too much speed/athleticism for Kansas State.
Michigan 29, Kansas State 24
Trey Burke a non-factor in the first half, but Hardaway's 12 points and 6 points off the bench from Mitch McGary help Michigan keep its lead at the break. K-State shooting just 8 of 29 from the floor, but staying in the game due to 8 offensive boards.
Michigan 26, Kansas State 20
-- 3:49, first half
Getting a little interesting for Michigan now as Trey Burke picks up his second foul. Rough half for Burke, he hasn't scored and now he'll likely sit the rest of the way. Spike Albrecht in now. Tim Hardaway has been the man for Michigan, he's got 11.
Michigan 21, Kansas State 13
-- 7:47, first half
Beilein has already played 10 players already as Michigan maintains its eight-point edge. Hardaway continues to play inspired basketball here in New York, as he scores on two straight very impressive takes toward the hoop. Mitch McGary added a nice post-up move in there as well.
Michigan 13, Kansas State 5
-- 11:53, first half
Kansas State begins the game 2 of 11 and Michigan takes advantage. The Wolverines are rebounding everything, too, as K-State has just one offensive board to this point. Nik Stauskas with 5 points off the bench, Wolverines up eight.
Michigan 4, Kansas State 0
-- 15:26, first half
Michigan starts with some sloppy play in transition with two early turnovers, but Kansas State is a mess on the offensive end -- starting the game 0-for-6 from the floor. Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glenn Robinson III have jumpers, that's it so far.
• Michigan going with the same starting 5 as usual -- Trey Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr., Matt Vogrich, Glenn Robinson III and Jordan Morgan.
• The Delaware-Pitt game went long (as usual), so we're probably looking at about a 4:50 tip here at Madison Square Garden.
Michigan looks to finish its New York trip in style this afternoon at Madison Square Garden.
The fourth-ranked Wolverines will go for their first holiday tournament championship since winning the Puerto Rico season tip-off in 1997 with an NIT Season Tip-Off championship game appearance against Kansas State.
The Wolverines got here by knocking off Pittsburgh on Wednesday, while the Wildcats arrived by narrowly defeating Delaware.
