UTL 2.0: Michigan to host 2nd night game against Notre Dame
Dust off the lights.
Michigan is getting the band back together for another night game at the Big House.
The Wolverines announced Wednesday their Sept. 7 home game against Notre Dame will be in primetime. It's a rematch of last year's Under The Lights matchup, a spectacular game that Michigan won 35-31 after staging a 17-point fourth-quarter comeback.
That was the first night game in Michigan Stadium history.
Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon has said he's looking to host one night game per year, and wishes to do it within the first five weeks of the season. The announcement, then, is not a surprise because Notre Dame is the highest-profile matchup within that window.
The Fighting Irish (12-0) beat Michigan 13-6 this year and will play in next month's BCS championship game against Alabama.
“Our athletic department is looking forward to recreating the night game magic from two years ago,” Brandon said in a statement. “We have more in store for this game than the initial night game and will work hard to create many WOW moments."
One such moment will be the honoring of former great Tom Harmon as a Michigan Legend. Like other Legends, Harmon's No. 98 -- which is currently retired -- will be reissued.
"He is one of the greatest athletes in school history and we are excited to celebrate all that he accomplished at Michigan," Brandon said in the statement. "Having Tom’s ‘Old 98’ back on the field will be special.
"This will be a memorable evening for everyone at Michigan Stadium or watching the game on TV. This will be the final matchup with Notre Dame at the Big House for the foreseeable future.”
The Fighting Irish cancelled games against Michigan in 2015-17, and the series already was headed for hiatus in 2018-19 as Notre Dame begins its partnership with the ACC.
The teams' final scheduled game will be in South Bend in 2014.
Notre Dame's Michigan Stadium sendoff promises to be a memorable one. An official game time has not been announced, although it will be at night and carried by ABC or ESPN.
