Live blog: No. 2 Michigan can move into a tie for first in the B1G with a win at Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. --
FINAL: Michigan 70, Illinois 64
Michigan 66, Illinois 50
-- 5:59, second half
Michigan answers Illinois' charge with an 11-2 run, making it look pretty easy now. Burke with 15 points. Jon Horford with 7 off the bench.
Michigan 55, Illinois 48
-- 9:08, second half
Trey Burke now 5 of 14 from the floor, and Illinois' is making its comeback.
Michigan 50, Illinois 37
-- 14:28, second half
Michigan on a 9-0 run now, and the Wolverines have their largest lead of the game. Nik Stauskas with 12, Trey Burke with 11, Glenn Robinson III with 10.
Michigan 46, Illinois 37
-- 15:39, second half
The Illini got within four, but a Nik Stauskas triple followed two really aggressive moves by Max Bielfeldt to push the Michigan lead back up to 9.
Michigan 35, Illinois 27
-- Trey Burke's long two just before the horn allows Michigan to close on an 8-2 run. Burke really turned it up late in the half, goes into the break with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Stauskas also has 9 points for Michigan.
Michigan 28, Illinois 22
-- 2:38, first half
Illinois still shooting 33 percent from the floor, and even without Jordan Morgan, Michigan has way more depth than the Illini. Really up-and-down pace here so far, which favors the Wolverines. Trey Burke just 2 of 8 from the floor, but he did just knock down a 3.
Michigan 19, Illinois 17
-- 7:31, first half
The Illini fighting back into this one as Michigan gives some of its starters a rest. Max Bielfeldt and Spike Albrecht are on the floor for the Wolverines now, Stauskas leads the way with 9. Neither team is blocking out much on the defensive glass.
Michigan 17, Illinois 10
-- 10:12, first half
Michigan uses an 11-0 run to open up its largest lead of the game. Jordan Morgan's back on the bench for Michigan right now, he's still limping a bit -- but it doesn't look overly serious. Jon Horford is giving quality minutes off the bench, and Illinois can't score.
Illinois 7, Michigan 6
-- 15:47, first half
A bit of adversity for Michigan to start things out here. Jordan Morgan goes down with an apparent left ankle injury moments into the game -- looked to be a pretty rough sprain. He went straight to the locker room, and hasn't returned to the bench. Michigan's going to have to play a man down for a least a while, it appears.
• Usual starters for Michigan: Burke/Hardaway/Stauskas/Robinson/Morgan.
Michigan's back on the road, and once again, there's plenty at stake.
The second-ranked Wolverines (18-1, 5-1 Big Ten) will fight for a possible No. 1 ranking and a first-place tie atop the Big Ten standings tonight when they invade Illinois' Assembly Hall (6 p.m., Big Ten Network).
With its win over Michigan State earlier in the day, Indiana is currently alone in first place with a 6-1 league mark. But a Michigan win later tonight would tie that.
As far as the No. 1 ranking goes, the Wolverines and Kansas (ranked No. 3 in the AP poll, No. 2 in the coaches poll) seem to be the only choices to move into the soon-to-be vacated top spot next week.
It's almost game time here in Champaign.
