ISSUE OF THE DAY
The last time Michigan had an opportunity to rise to No. 1 nationally, it failed.
The Wolverines had a chance to take over the top spot in The Associated Press Top 25 earlier this month when it traveled to Ohio State. But the Buckeyes' massive first half put a stop to that conversation, and Michigan's valiant second-half comeback wasn't enough in a 56-53 loss.
Michigan wasn't ready to embrace that opportunity. Will it be Sunday?
If the Wolverines can get by Illinois in Champaign, there's a strong chance they'll hop into the top spot in the polls for the first time since 1992.
No. 3 Kansas might also have a say in the matter, but the Wolverines can't worry about that -- they've got enough on their plate in Illinois and former Ohio coach John Groce. Yeah, that John Groce, the same guy who led Ohio to an NCAA tournament upset win over Michigan last spring.
Can Michigan keep itself toward the top of the Big Ten standings and possibly move to No. 1 overall nationally?
Or will the pressure on the road prove to be too much again?
We'll find out this evening.
Did Michigan learn from its mistakes on the road at Ohio State in this situation, or will the pressure of playing for the nation's top spot be too much once again?
