Soundbites: Will Campbell on shark wrestling, Denard on his legacy, everything in between from trip
TAMPA, Fla. -- Michigan was in Florida for 10 days.
That's a long time. And a lot of talking.
A look at some of the best soundbites from before and after the Wolverines' 33-28 loss Tuesday to South Carolina in the Outback Bowl -- the good, the bad, and the comical.
Before the game
"We have a distant cousin of Bob Marley and an accountant as our captains." -- Michigan coach Brady Hoke, referring to quarterback Denard Robinson and safety Jordan Kovacs at a bowl luncheon. He didn't clarify which was which.
"It's hard out here. I done fought two sharks, wrestled a sting ray, ate two crabs -- had butter out there. It's hard out here, but you know how we do it. I'm from Detroit. You know, it was nothing. Two great whites, punched a whale in the face -- easy day. Go Blue." -- Defensive tackle Will Campbell, speaking with MGoBlue about a trip to the beach.
"I think what keeps most coaches going a long time is they don’t get fired or run off. I haven’t gotten fired or run off." -- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, on still coaching at 67 years old.
"If you look at him from the back, he definitely looks like a very strong woman. He has very pretty hair." -- Defensive end Craig Roh, on linebacker Jake Ryan.
"He hurts people." -- South Carolina receiver Ace Sanders on Ryan.
"You're the best, bro! You're the best! You get all over that field like a boss, bro." -- An unnamed fan to Kovacs in the middle of a media interview.
"I think so. They’re not used to playing and SEC-caliber defense like ours. We’ll be ready." -- South Carolina safety D.J. Swearinger, on whether Michigan will be surprised by USC's defensive speed
"He played the trombone. Did you know he played the trombone? That's a tough one to picture." -- Kovacs, on Robinson
"A guy like him, great athlete, you can compare him to Cam Newton and (Tim) Tebow. ... It’s another headache for the defense." -- South Carolina linebacker Shaq Wilson, on Robinson.
"He can do about anything. He doesn't punt real well, but he can do a lot of things." -- Hoke, on Robinson.
After the game
"I can't explain it. No regrets, man." -- Robinson, on whether he thought he should have been used at tailback sooner.
"Everyone told me he was unblockable one-on-one, un-everything, All-American, all of this. Today, I did my job, did my job for Michigan." -- Left tackle Taylor Lewan, on his matchup with Jadeveon Clowney
"He was sensational. He's (from) down here in Bradenton, and you probably wonder how we got him away from Florida and Florida State. They passed on him, said he was too little but he can play -- that's for sure." -- Spurrier, on 5-foot-8 South Carolina receiver and Outback Bowl MVP Ace Sanders.
"Once I saw Bruce Ellington and Brison Williams holding up the gunners, there was nobody else downfield." -- Sanders, on his 63-yard punt return for a touchdown
"We scored in the last 3 minutes there, and we haven't won one like that since I've been here in eight years." -- Spurrier
"We had worked that fake punt for nine weeks. Last game, we better run it. The banquet's over with, so we can't save it for the banquet." -- Hoke, on unveiling the fake punt in the final game.
"I want them to remember whatever they want to remember -- the ups, and downs. I know I’m going to remember the downs, and ups. It’s always going to be a bittersweet feeling. ... I would never imagine I'd have done the things I did. I'd never imagine I'd be in the Big House with everybody wearing my jersey." -- Robinson, on how he hopes to be remembered.
"The most exciting player ever to play at Michigan. I mean, you’re not going to get another like that again. I don’t think you’ll find that for years to come." -- Defensive tackle Will Campbell.
"Everybody’s seen what he’s done for the university, and the big impact he’s had -- probably the biggest of all time. His legacy is set, and we just have to move on." -- Quarterback Devin Gardner
"It was a fail. But, one thing I can say: We went 100 percent every time we stepped on the field." -- Robinson, on the season.
"We've got a long way to go as a football program." -- Hoke
