Now, his name has been linked to a specific job.
Football Scoop is reporting Oklahoma is interested in Montgomery for its defensive line vacancy. The Sooners fired longtime assistant Jackie Shipp this offseason.
Hearing Michigan DL coach Jerry Montgomery is a guy Bob & Mike Stoops are strongly considering.... will update— FootballScoop Staff (@footballscoop) February 21, 2013
Michigan declined to comment on whether another program has interest in one of its assistants.
Montgomery, 32, has coached Michigan's defensive line since Brady Hoke was hired as head coach in 2011. He has received an education in coaching the position from Hoke and defensive coordinator Greg Mattison, both of whom have expertise in defensive line.
He also has been one of the Wolverines' most effective recruiters.
Montgomery came to Michigan from Wyoming, where he was the Cowboys' defensive line coach from 2009-10. He got his FBS start at Northern Iowa, where he was a graduate assistant in 2006 and defensive line coach from 2007-08.
He was a four-year starter at defensive tackle for Iowa from 1998-2001.
