A little time spent on the Huron River results in a big catfish for dinner

By AnnArbor.com Staff

This week we asked readers to send us photos of themselves enjoying the weather around Ann Arbor's neighborhoods.

The following photos were snapped on Thursday afternoon by staff photographer Lon Horwedel.

Paul McCoy, Ypsilanti, relaxes under the Huron Parkway bridge at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor, as he fishes for "anything that will bite" on Thursday afternoon, May 27. Shortly after the picture was taken, McCoy caught the channel catfish (see above) that would be his dinner for the night.

I saw a bait fisherman catch a very nice channel cat in the plunge pool under the railroad bridge at Delhi. Some of them must be maturing.

Durn, that should read "several thousand channel cats were planted", and it is channel cats I catch by accident.

I've never caught flatheads in the Huron up here, but don't know much about lower down the river. Several thousand were planted in the Barton, Geddes, and Ford impoundments, and in Portage lake, in 2002,3 and 4, trying for a sustainable population (speculation there). I catch them only "by accident" and so don't have a good idea of the size distribution or density. My data is from the michigan stocking database: http://www.michigandnr.com/fishstock/

I have heard of Flatheads in the Grand River, I always wondered if the Huron could support a population of Flatheads.

Could Paul be a descendant of Elijah "The Real" McCoy?
