Thurston student wins award for community outreach

The captain of Thurston Elementary American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Ann Arbor - Joshua Smith — won the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Award for community outreach. He took second place, the $750 silver award for the Detroit area. Josh Smith is a two year team captain of the American Cancer Society relay for life. The youngest team captain there, he raised 250 last year, including over 100 through personal fundraising efforts.

The award will go to the Thurston PTO ($400) towards community outreach projects, and to the American Cancer Society Relay for life, Ann Arbor ($350). The awards ceremony is today at the Palace of Auburn Hills, before the circus performance. He will be presented with a silver medal and free tickets for the front row. Josh is in 5th grade at Thurston Elementary school, and his favorite subject is Art.
