Water main break repair on Ann Arbor's west side could take until midnight

By Cindy Heflin

Water service won't likely be restored until at least 9 p.m. in an area of west Ann Arbor where a water main broke this afternoon, and it could take until midnight to repair the break, Elizabeth Rolla, senior project manager said.

Just before 6:30 p.m., Rolla said the problem had been identified, the water shut down in the area of West Stadium Boulevard and Westfield Avenue and crews had started making repairs. The affected area includes:

  • West Stadium Boulevard, between Westfield and Maywood
  • Stadium Court
  • Westfield Avenue
  • Maywood Avenue
  • Avondale Avenue
  • Ardmoor Avenue
  • Greenview Drive and
  • Arella Boulevard

The break occurred about 12:15 p.m. at West Stadium Boulevard and Westfield Avenue. Westfield is closed to traffic. Stadium already had the eastbound lanes and one westbound lane closed because of road construction. Traffic is being maintained in one westbound lane, Rolla said.

Once service is restored, residents water may have an orange or rusty appearance. The water will be safe to drink, but Rolla said residents should run the cold water for a few minutes and flush toilets once or twice to clear the lines.

I'm waiting for the anti government bunch to chime on how bad public service is in Ann Arbor because of all the liberals and how much better and cheaper private business and the free market could handle the problem.

The water at my house, on Ardmoor, has been just fine since they got it back on. It shouldn't have happened but thank you to the guys who worked on it after 5:00 p.m. on a holiday weekend!

who, what, when where and is it safe to drink. Doesn't matter why, just doesn't matter. It's just broken, that's all. Probably kids.

We were affected by this and after running our water for much, much longer than several minutes plus doing a load of laundry, the water's still coming out rusty colored. (Thankfully the laundry load was rags and such.) Could this mean it has not been fixed or do we need to run the water for a longer time?

Is this really from the construction project there? How does this happen?

I haven't had water for hours, but when it does finally come in, I'm not sure if I want to drink orange water, but thank you AA Water Dept. for telling me it is safe.
