Water will be shut off Thursday for residents along West Stadium for connection of new water mains. Affected residents have had notices placed on their doors by the City of Ann Arbor.

The City of Ann Arbor has notified some residents near the West Stadium Boulevard road, water, and sewer construction project that their water will be turned off on Thursday, June 17, in order to connect a section of the new water main to the existing water system. Residents may notice a change in water pressure today prior to shutoff as crews prepare to do the work. Water is expected to be back on by 7 p.m., according to an e-mail sent to residents by Elizabeth Rolla, Senior Project Manager.

Streets expected to be affected include Avondale (Catalina to Greenview); Maywood (Avondale to W. Stadium); Westfield (Avondale to W. Stadium); Arella (W. Stadium to Pauline); Stadium Ct; Kay Pkwy (W. Stadium to Chapel Ct); Alhambra (W. Stadium to Coronada); and W. Stadium (Suffolk to Maywood).

When water is turned back on, it may have an orange or rusty appearance, similar to the orange water sometimes seen after a water main leak or the periodic water main flush. If your water turns orange, run the cold taps until it clears. Don't do laundry if your water is orange; if you do notice rust stains on clothes, don't dry them in the dryer before treating the stains.

The notification also gives an update on construction:

Construction is continuing on schedule. The last few weeks, the contractor installed the storm sewer, water main, and edge drain pipes on the south side of W. Stadium. Now that most of the underground pipes are in place, work will continue on building the road base (the sand and stone), installing the light pole foundations/conduit, and then placing the concrete curbs and sidewalks. Weather permitting, we expect to switch construction to the north side of the road before the end of July.

I wish I'd gotten an email. I live on Ardmoor and though it's not shown on the map as an affected street, I woke up to no water this morning.

I seem to remember being told by a plumber that if the water is shut off, you should open a faucet so that when they turn the water back on, the sudden pressure won't be a problem - does anybody know if that's right? (Don't want to leave my water running unnecessarily while I'm out of the house.)

Thanks for the map, Ed. I wish the city had included something similar in their email this morning!
