Knutilla painted the mural as part of the program for her Girl Scout Gold Award, according to Cynthia Edwards, the thrift shop's volunteer coordinator.
Edwards sent along the following explanation from Knutilla about why she painted the mural:
"My name is Laura Knutilla and I’ve been a Girl Scout since 2nd grade. I am now a senior at Huron High School and am in the final steps for completing my Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts. The final step of the Gold Award is a project that asks girls to make a long lasting effect on their community. When deciding what I would do for my project I knew I wanted to help the PTO Thrift Shop. The PTO Thrift Shop has allowed countless students to raise money for trips, school groups, and teams. I have worked at the Thrift Shop since middle school and have seen first hand the good work they do. Upon consultation with the managers and board, we decided that I would make a mural for the new library area. This worked perfectly with my love of art, reading, and need to give back to the community. For the next year I painted the mural and now I’m having a celebration the completion of the mural and the hard work of the PTO Thrift Shop. "
