Waiting on Social Security decision, still looking for apartment before back surgery

By Thomas Bare

Hello everyone. Do you have any big plans for this holiday weekend? Plan to fire up that grill, spend time with the family or take a dip in the pool? Wish I could do all three.

Well I wanted to give some updates in regard to a couple of my last posts. As expected, my grievance claim to try to get back in the Robert J. Delonis Center was denied.

But on another issue in regard to that grievance, I did have my appeal process for the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program, which is run by Michigan State Housing Development Authority, yesterday and it was more clearly laid out to me what the program offers and what I have to do. It is a new program through the government and they are still trying to work out the bugs.

So along with a conversation that I had with my claims adjuster from Social Security Administration on Monday, it is sounds like there may be a decision in the next week or two. I am applying for Social Security disability income from the government. If I am approved for the disability income, it would really help my case with HPRP and hopefully get myself into a place.

I am really trying to find a place to live because I also talked to my doctors office yesterday and my back surgery has been re-scheduled to July 14 instead of July 19th. I was told it may be rescheduled for a date even soon, perhaps a date sometime in June. The issue is trying to find an open slot for an operating room.

So I am looking forward to getting into an apartment before my back surgery with the help of my Social Security disability claim and the HPRP program so when I am released from the hospital, I have a stable place to rehabilitate. I'm also lucky to have been working with great case workers from the Washtenaw County Community Crisis Response Team and the Homeless Project Outreach Team.

So until next week, take care and save a burger or steak for me.
