Hanging out at the Hands-on Math and Science Night at Pittsfield Elementary
Kids couldn't keep their hands off the Science on Thursday night at Pittsfield's Family Math and Science Night, hosted by the Pittsfield Grange. Making this slightly solid, slightly liquid substance proved to be the hands-on hit of the evening.

Kids explored math and science through creative activities, experiments, displays, demonstrations, and games.
They created shapes with soap bubbles, examined pond-critters from bugs to crayfish up close, and calculated the area of shapes using M&M's.

A favorite station - entitled Icky-Sticky for good reason - featured some slimy, home-made goo. Decked out in spring colors, the goo was just one of the experiments the kids could do themselves and take with them.
The Pittsfield Elementary Robotics Club (P.E.R.C.) was also out to demonstrate what their robots - and students - can do. These upper elementary students are developing their interests in hands-on science and engineering. They meet Tuesday mornings before school in the Pittsfield Media Center.
The Pittsfield Grange program featured more than a dozen creative ways to have real hands-on fun with math and science, and was designed to appeal to kids of all ages. The stations offered parents ideas and insight into applied math and science enrichment they could take home and try with their kids.
For most of those kids, they were really happy to take home their goo.
