13-hour standoff with teenage gunman ends peacefully in Sylvan Township, troopers say

By Lee Higgins

Michigan State Police SWAT team members used tear gas to force a 15-year-old boy from his Sylvan Township home this afternoon after he threatened his sister with a gun, bringing a peaceful end to a 13-hour standoff, troopers said.

No one was injured, no one was held hostage and the boy never threatened officers during the incident on Garvey Road, which began at 1 a.m., police said.

The boy threatened his sister after a fight and also threatened suicide, said a police official who identified herself only as Sgt. S. Larkins. According to Larkins, the boy's sister and mother left the home on their own during the incident.

The boy is being held at the county's juvenile detention facility, Larkins said.
