14 people arrested, 20 ejected during first Michigan football home night game

By Nathan Bomey

University of Michigan police arrested 14 people during the Michigan football team's first home night game tonight, but officers were mostly pleased with the behavior of the crowd.

The number of arrests inside the stadium was generally in line with a normal football game.

Throughout the rest of Ann Arbor, though, the Ann Arbor Police Department was addressing numerous incidents, including several assaults and many reports of public drunkenness.

A spokeswoman for the Ann Arbor Police Department declined to provide details of several incidents reported throughout the night.

Inside the stadium, five people were arrested for disorderly conduct, one for domestic violence, one for resisting and obstructing a police officer and seven for other violations, said U-M Department of Public Safety public information officer Diane Brown.

Stadium officials ejected 20 fans, including 10 for disorderly conduct, six for possession of alcohol, two for possession of another person's ID, one for throwing projectiles and one for urinating in public.

Medical personnel treated 98 people. Of those, 14 were transported to the hospital, and one was in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest.

The official attendance for the game was 114,804, an NCAA record.

Public drunkenness? I was sitting outside the Kroger store @ Industrial & Stadium yesterday afternoon when a man (looked to be ~ 50 yrs. old) staggered over to me, he was dressed in full Wolverines fan regalia. He asked, "How do I call a cab?" I almost started reciting the famous "How To Call A Cab" Wikipedia article. ;-) But instead, I recited from memory the Yellow Cab phone number. He took out his cell phone and... just sat staring at it like it was a device dropped from a UFO. He repeated his question, I repeated the phone number. Several repetitions later, he was still staring at his cell phone as I walked away.

Other than Rudy, I don't know of anyone that actually lives at a stadium, so how do you get arrested for domestic violence.

The charge is based on the relationship (past or present) between the people involved, not where it occurs. Thus you can have a domestic violence incident anywhere.

Why does the number of people in attendance seem to grow week after week? Isn't there a maximum occupancy number??

Maybe there should be a few more night games but let's get some better schools (Yes, they both played terrible football).

All of this is because of one man, Greg O'Dell......

Yea one man because there was no washtenaw county, state police or Ann arbor officers at the game. It was just one man. Was he carrying a lightning bolt or a big hammer? This machine has been in place and operating long before Greg Odell. Sorry.
