2 crashes on westbound M-14 back up morning commute
Two traffic crashes were slowing traffic on westbound M-14 Tuesday morning, dispatchers said.
Washtenaw County metro dispatchers reported a crash at westbound M-14 and Barton Drive and a crash at westbound M-14 and Main Street. Dispatchers said police were on scene and the crashes were not believed to be blocking any lanes.
Traffic was backed up in the area all the way back to the junction of U.S. 23 and M-14 and partially onto the ramp from southbound U.S. 23 to westbound M-14.
It’s unknown if anyone was injured in the crashes. There also appeared to be normal traffic slowdowns on westbound Interstate 94 in Ypsilanti and near U.S. 23.

It seems these crashes were very close together on both ends of the Huron River bridge. A car entering from Barton heading west and a car exiting onto Main heading into town were both in crashes. In the space of the bridge length cars must merge into and exit from the same lane as fast-moving vehicles including semis going fast to make it up the long hill heading west. DOT: Have a sign saying Thru Traffic Keep Left before this area so there is less congestion in the "slow" lane and more chance to get on and off safely. And then there's the entrance from Barton heading north from a dead stop into fast traffic as well. This entire interchange area on both sides of the river needs overhaul after making do for 40 years with the two-way hairpin curve Barton Exit and having NO way to get to downtown from the west except to exit on Barton, go under the xway, re-enter on the other side using Barton, then exit on Main--really annoying if done routinely.

Sooze, when I passed the incidents yesterday I thoughts of the same thing. Having some type of electric sign over the free way just before you enter that curve telling people to move left for merging traffic could probably help.
