By AnnArbor.com Staff

Update: Suspect named in fatal shooting in Ypsilanti Township

A 20-year-old Ypsilanti Township man was killed after a fight this afternoon on the sidewalk near the Kmart parking lot in Ypsilanti Township, said Derrick Jackson of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department.

Police responded at 4 p.m. to shots fired in the area of Golfside and Washtenaw, where the man was apparently in a fight with two others. At some point, the victim was shot and collapsed about 200 yards away.

He was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

The other two people in the fight fled the scene. No other details were immediately available about the individuals being sought by police.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's tip line at 734-973-7711.

newsboy---I went back to read your comments! We are on the same side??? I know teachers on both sides...I live on the east side, I taught on the east side, my kids started school on the east side. My kids have been on both sides and hang with kids on both sides! Your words speak of exactly the thinking that is haunting a solution to this violence...Ann Arbor folks want their kids to be safe as well. I am wanting a safe community for all kids.

@JMAC and GIBBY76 Per the update, the suspect was 20 years old same as the victim. There are already gun control laws prohibiting those under 21 from concealing a pistol. There are already laws concerning the safe transport of firearms without a CPL. There are already laws against brandishing of firearms. There are already laws against using a gun in the commission of a crime. There are already laws against murder. Please let us know what additional laws would have prevented this and similar tragedies if criminals are not following the ones already on the books?

This is very sad. Mixing guns, young men, and arguments, someone is going to get hurt or killed. Prime example for the need for gun control in this country.

You don't identify the young man, but since everyone seems to know who he is (including those of us who saw the report on TV) couldn't you make that information part of the story?

Newsboy I agree, my son including. Him and his friends all went out to the candlelight vigil for Chris last night. He definitely was a good friend and left many friends behind. They are all grieving his loss and will miss him very much.

@Craig you are correct about Golfside being the boundry. @John Gault You really should get your facts straight.Every day? I don't think so.I believe you are just being fooled by the lack of reporting on Ann Arbor crime

"We need to mourn the loss of a great kid. Not get in a pissing match about where he was gunned down." I agree. "Golfside is Ann Arbor schools." Golfside is a boundry I believe. It would be Ann Arbor on the West side and Ypsilanti on the east. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/CGI_SD04_L_Ann_Arbor_Public_Schools_105715_7.pdf

Golfside is Ann Arbor schools. Two miles from the Sheriffs Dept. You think your safe in A2. We need to mourn the loss of a great kid. Not get in a pissing match about where he was gunned down.

Sunday a shooting. 3 days ago an armed robbery, all within a few hundred yards of each other in Ypsi Township. Is this a new pattern for Ypsi Township? I'm concerned, because I live not far from there, and it is an area near WCC and St. Joe's.

This is so sad, Chris was such a nice young man and it goes to show you, when in Ypsilanti, you never know who is next to be going to share time with Jesus and his friends.

How very very sad, so sorry to know of his passing. My daughter graduated the same year as Chris and I enjoyed watching him run track and field. He was very talented!

My heart goes out to his family. He mentored my son when he attended Saline High school. He left a lasting impressing on him. Always there to stick up for him when others would bother him. RIP Chris. Yes he is the Chris who ran track. He will be sadly missed.
