3 sent to hospital after gravel hauler rear-ends vehicle
A crash involving a gravel hauler and another vehicle in Pittsfield Township sent three people to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with minor injuries Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams said emergency personnel were dispatched at 1:19 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Platt Road.
Pittsfield Township Fire Chief Sean Gleason said a truck, which he referred to as a gravel-hauling train, rear-ended a vehicle carrying three occupants at the intersection. The driver and two passengers were in pain and had to be put on backboards before being transported to the hospital.
Gleason said their injuries are not life threatening and there were only two vehicles involved in the crash.

Now would be a good time for a story on how the state regulates trucks differently than the federal standard. Some would say better. Still, there will always be operator error and equipment failure. I don't remember the government banning SUV's when they regularly flipped over, although they did mandate traction control systems, tire pressure sensors, and curtain air bags on new vehicles in response to people failing to maintain their personal vehicles.

once again - the safety of these vehicle-trains is at best questionable. they are difficult to control. their weight does significant damage to our roads. And yet we allow them to operate with a second trailer on the back exponentially expanding their risk. these vehicles need sensible regulation. currently, they are not regulated well and have become down right dangerous/deadly to others on the road.

Did the light just turn red and the car suddenly stopped? I always check my rear view mirror to see what is behind me before stopping. Remember regardless how attentive the truck driver is their rigs take a lot farther to stop than a car.

Sounds like the driver fell asleep.

We're not told which direction the vehicles were traveling, but it sounds like the gravel hauler driver wasn't paying attention. The smaller vehicle was stopped for traffic on Michigan Avenue.

Not the first time or the last. I will reserve my comments on gravel haulers in this area because I'm sure they would be deleted.

I was going to comment on the gravel haulers too but it would just be deleted by a2dotcom. Why bother?

It is time to investigate the safety and practices of these "trains".
