3-year-old girl in serious condition after near-drowning in Independence Lake

By Amalie Nash

A 3-year-old girl found submerged and unconscious in Independence Lake in Webster Township Sunday evening was upgraded to serious condition Monday, authorities said.

But the girl is still unresponsive and is not breathing on her own, authorities said today.

The girl was rushed to the University of Michigan Medical Center in critical condition at about 7:05 p.m. after she was pulled from the water. The girl's family, visiting from France, was with relatives from Ypsilanti Township celebrating the Fourth of July holiday weekend at the busy lake.

Washtenaw County sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson said the girl is now listed as serious, but he did not have additional details on her condition.

It wasn't clear how long she was submerged, but police believe it was five minutes at the most. Another visitor at the lake discovered the girl in shallow water, and that person and a lifeguard performed CPR, Jackson said.

The name of the girl has not been released.

Independence Lake is located at 3200 Jennings Road in Webster Township.

We met this family at U of M Children's Hospital. We were there with a three year old who was having heart surgery. I believe her name was Ocea? Did she pass away? or is she well now. Please let us know. We talked with her family several times during Skyler's stay at the hospital. Can we please get an update to this. Does the family need help with anything? It would be so horrible to have family from around the world for a vacation and then to lose a little one.

My heart goes out to the family and I pray for the recovery of this child. As a grandparent, it is a horrible nightmare to think of this happening to one of my own. It is so easy for this to happen that it scares me. I hope there is a follow up on this story to let us know what the outcome is.
