33-year-old man killed, two others wounded in overnight shooting in Ypsilanti Township

By Steve Pepple

One man was killed and two other wounded in an overnight shooting in Ypsilanti Township, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department.

No arrests have been made as of this morning, according to Sheriff’s Department spokesman Derrick Jackson.

Jackson said the department received reports of gunfire about 2:30 a.m. today near the intersection of Mary Catherine and Nash streets in Ypsilanti Township’s West Willow neighborhood. When deputies arrived they found a mortally wounded 33-year-old Ypsilanti man. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Jackson said the two other gunshot victims were gone when deputies arrived and transported themselves to a local hospital. He said the condition of those two men, one who was born in 1979 and the other in 1981, were not available these morning.

Investigators were still piecing evidence together this morning, Jackson said, and no arrests had been made.

After reading the comments the first thought that I have is that this man was a child of God. It does not matter where he lived. His life was taken early and no one deserves to die a violent death no matter where you live. He was someones father, son, boyfriend, cousin, grandson, nephew. He was a person who died too young. Lets have some respect for his family. Pray for the family, and all the people that loved him. Many people live in West Willow and they do not involve themselves in crime. So to judge the entire neighborhood is not appropriate. Try to keep your comments on track. To state of obvious is not necessary.

Leftys comment is a perfect example of the anti law enforcement sentiment in that area.

Those of you clamoring for police protection in West Willow might not want to hold your breath. Law Enforcement nationwide has proven time and time again that they will allow gangsters to terrorize neighborhoods and innocent citizens. They will allow drug sales, assaults, murders, and every assorted type of crime UNTIL one of them shoots a cop. Then all of the sudden, the police find the resources to move in and clean up a neighborhood. That's how it happened in WW several years ago. The gang intimidation went on for years until somebody hit some deputies with bird shot. It's this simple: Cops consider their lives to be worth more than ours so until the gangsters shoot a cop, the police will do nothing about the problem.

Guns, guns, GUNS! Everyone still likes guns right? Why doesn't Canada have this problem? They have more guns than we do per capita. Look into it.

Canadians are more civilized than Americans. They don't have much of an "underclass" because they aren't trying to conquer the world. Their social consciousness helps them to conquer the ills of society! They are just all around good neighbors in every sense!

Andy, that is one of the most outrageously absurd comments on this thread. Guns are not the problem, people who choose to misuse guns are the problem. About Canada- the ydont have much of a problem, because of a variety of reasons, one of which is that they dont have a big population of what sociologists and criminologists cal an "underclass".

I have to agree with AA on ending all police patrols, several officers have been assaulted in this neighborhood over the years. Not to mention the amount of disrespect and vitriol that these citizens have towards law enforcement. I think most of us believe that in order to help someone they have to want the help and its obvious that West Willow doesn't want the help. They blame everyone else for their problems as was noted in recent article about the handling of a large party, instead of blaming their neighbors for throwing large out of control parties they blame the police for not controlling the situation.

Facts please....No officers were 'assaulted' in West Willow in the past couple of years. The incident was a shooting in late summer 2010 which a young lady who was a innocent by-stander at the event was shot. WSCD acknowledged that response time to the shooting was not at the departments normal standards, in this case. Since that point, with the NWWNA working with WSCD officials, response time to incidents such as these (shootings, shots fired) has improved. That was the points behind the initial complaints surrounding the victim, to improve response time. Please let's not make more of the situation then what it was. Next, West Willow has homeowners, rental property landlords and renters (via their rental payments) that pay properly taxes for police protection, just like any other area of Ypsilanti Township and Washtenaw County. With this, it would not be wise to eliminate a service that residents are paying for. I am sure that if this was done in your community, you would not take this situation lightly. As for West Willow not 'wanting' help, the NWWNA and Residents are indeed working with officers and administration leadership of the WSCD. The community has a Citizen's Patrol that regularly communicate with deputies and supervisors in law enforcement and a strong neighborhood watch. By the way, the Citizen's Patrol is a volunteer entity, so I believe that dismisses your statement in most of its' entirely, here.

Nothing will ever change in this 'neighborhood'. I would stop all police patrols.

Unfortunately it is against the law to go door-to-door and check everybody for outstanding warrants. If they did this in West Willow, the neighborhood would be a lot safer, but the jails/prisons would be filled to capacity.

I live right on the outskirts of west willow. I heard they had a lot of community involvement with neighborhood watch programs in place and stepped up police patrols in the troubled areas is this not true? and what is the death rate from violence in the past couple years? is this our most dangerous neighborhood in ypsi and ypsi twnshp?

It is time for LAWNET to hit the streets of West Willow again and the WSCD need to support this right away. I am growing increasingly worried of what the summer will bring with the recent rash of winter shootings in the area.

LAWNET is suppose to do what? LAWNET is a drug enforcement agency, there's nothing to indicate drugs were involved, at least at this point. I would MUCH rather see the WCSD reinstitute a Gang Squad in Ypsi Twp, Ypsi City and Superor Twp as soon as Clayton admits to himself and the community there's a problem.

I wish people would just find a better way to deal with their conflicts than pulling out a gun.... I keep saying that it's only a matter of time before one of those bullets ends up going through an innocent person in their home. This has got to stop.

I know there is no shortage of community members trying to make a difference in West Willow. To say or imply these problems only exist in the Willow isn't right. I can't wait to hear the details when they are released from WCSD. I hope LAWNET and WCSD are working on this. I know it takes time to gather information and execute punishment. Sometimes I think the law protects the criminals more than it does the good citizens. People might not understand just how organized these criminals are. Angela I stand by the good folks who live in the Willow. I'm sorry I have not had the time to be more involved. I hope local law officials will get these issues taken care of before spring.

Who's saying the victims were guilty of anything? Just because someone got shot doesn't mean they deserved to be. There's innocents everywhere.

Angela, Exactly right. I cannot imagine the fear of the many good solid people in the community. It's horrible to have to live in fear.
