3,600 without power in central Ann Arbor

By AnnArbor.com Staff

At least 3,600 DTE Energy customers in central Ann Arbor were without power Friday night after reports that a transformer went out near Platt Road.

A DTE outage map showed that customers affected were mostly along Washtenaw and Packard, including the Ann Arbor Hills neighborhood and homes near Independence Boulevard and Burns Park.

At least two traffic signals were out for a time on Friday: One on Platt Road near Huron Parkway and one on Packard near Stone School. Ann Arbor Police reported traffic slowdowns near Washtenaw and Huron Parkway.

The power was expected to be restored by 10:30 p.m., according to DTE estimates.

The outage map showed that power was restored by Saturday morning. Further information was not available.

The power actually didn't come on until midnight on Friday, but whatever. Does anyone know what the cause was?

Power outages in Ann Arbor don't surprise me. They always happen by S Industrial. I always get calls from friends asking if we have power. Well duh, if you move to Ypsi you would.

I thought I was doing well, because I have had power (with only momentary interruptions) for nearly three months. These things are very disruptive to my life, as well as the lives of many others, I am sure. Why doesn't the dot.com do a full story on why this happened. From here it looks like an unforced error--no storms or winds, just a transformer failure. How old is the thing? When was it last updated? How soon can we expect to see it blow up again? Is DTE really living up to its duty to provide service when these things happen so often? These are questions, not answers, but they are questions for which a lot of your readers would undoubtedly like answers.

Some explanation of WHY the transformer went out would have been very helpful. There have been a lot of power outages lately in this neighborhood. Is it the construction at Platt and Washtenaw? Business and individuals are being very much inconvenienced.

Not a valid excuse for a newspaper

It was quite some stretch of roads/intersections that were without traffic signals. Washtenaw all the way from Platt to Hill, Stadium from its split to who-knows-where (I went the other direction), as well as the portion of Platt and Packard roads in that area. I, too, was surprised at no police traffic control or temporary stop signs. It was mayhem.

I was leaving downtown by way of Washtenaw at about 9:30 and there were stops signs in all the stoplight intersections at that time. I do agree that there should have been a police presence directing traffic at Washtenaw and Huron Parkway though.

C'mon - we need the police downtown to take care of the tourists. They can't be bothered with directing traffic out in the taxpayer areas of the city.

Power was about from 6:15 Friday to 3:30 AM Saturday, it was crazy. a women from down the street heard what sounded like gunshots, which obviously was the transformer blowing up. I was on my computer when the power went off. We had an early dinner. So then we played cards and listen to the Tigers game which was a bummer, all by candlelight. We went to bed and the next morning it was on.

I, too, wonder why so many power outages? Would be nice to have a more in-depth reporting as to why this is happening? What are the breakdowns about? connected to? Also good to hear some of the 'not so good' consequences for people who may be more dependent on the power just to maintain life....

It would be interesting to know why Ann Arbor has so many power outages.I used to work at Domino's ( and this was 25 years ago ) by the old Krogers 's off Washtenaw and all it took was a strong breeze to knock it out.I live in Ypsi twp just east of Golfside and it usually takes something pretty big to knock out the power.( once in a while, we may wake up and have to reset the clocks ) But I't's been YEARS since we've lost power for any amount time

this seems to be happening a lot more often in Ann Arbor than it used to. Whats the deal?

Are you serious?

Not snarky but I wonder why the AAPD did not have someone directing traffic at the Washtenaw/Huron Parkway intersection. Went through there about 6:00 and traffice was backed up all the way to 23 from the East and to the Washtenaw/Stadium split.
