4 crashes tie up U.S. 23 during afternoon commute

By Kyle Feldscher

Four accidents on U.S. 23 are tying up the afternoon commute, including three on southbound U.S. 23, dispatchers said.

According to Washtenaw County dispatchers, as of 5:35 p.m. there were accidents on southbound U.S. 23 at Plymouth Road, Six Mile and Five Mile. Earlier, one man was killed in a separate accident on southbound U.S. 23 at Six Mile when a semi truck rolled over onto his PT Cruiser.

Three vehicles were involved in a crash at northbound U.S. 23 and Plymouth Road that was blocking the right lane, dispatchers said.

There were no injuries in the four crashes slowing traffic Monday afternoon.

Why is it never the drivers fault around here ? If the weather is bad it's the Road Commission's fault if the weather and roads are fine it's the configuration of the roads fault. Here's a novel idea....learn how to drive and leave home earlier

Could Daylight Saving Time have had anything to do with it? Or was it cloudy and dark for motorists during the time of the accidents? I know the sun burst forth for a short time this afternoon, as a reminder that it really is setting later during DST. That's why I wonder if some drivers found themselves driving into bright sunlight, and didn't have a pair of sunglasses handy. Those who exit northbound US-23 have a choice of three ramp lanes if exiting onto Plymouth Road. Two lanes westbound, one eastbound lane. I wonder if someone realized he was in a wrong lane on the RAMP and edged into another vehicle that was in the desired lane. Not much distance on a ramp to get into the lane for where you want to go.

Really? People need to learn to drive.

It seems like a daily occurrence that there are accidents on 23. This road needs to be reconfigured throughout Washtenaw County, possibly by adding more lanes and putting in that commuter rail from AA to Brighton/Howell.

A third lane, yes. The rail line is just a silly boondoggle - cost studies have long since determined it's not even remotely viable and would do nothing to relieve congestion on 23.

What else is new? Always daily crashes on 23, a terribly designed road with far too much congestion and traffic.
