5-car crash backs up traffic on U.S. 23 north of Ann Arbor

By Cindy Heflin

A five-car crash was snarling the morning commute on U.S. 23 north of Ann Arbor Monday.

The crash was on the southbound side of the freeway and was not blocking traffic, a dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said. No injuries were reported.

Michigan State Police were on the scene of the crash, the dispatcher said at 7:30 a.m. A Google traffic map showed a miles-long backup on the freeway. No further information was immediately available.

For the past 40 years I've been on this leg of US-23, the problems are caused by drivers entering southbound lane(s) at 40 -50 mph and 'demanding' to merge into 70+ mph flowing traffic. Like any other type of flow system (sewers, arteries, traffic, etc.) there's going to be a stroke (blockage). The causes IMHO are the short entrance ramps, the inability of Michigan drivers to understand 'yield', 'blending' 'merge' or whatever you want to call it. Arizona does it best by putting traffic signals on the entrance ramps in a few crisis locations. If there is no room to merge, you are prohibited from entering. Too bad if you are late. Of course, a few slow semi-trucks has the same effect. I wish the State would adopt the Euro-law that requires trucks to only occupy the right lanes. If your truck is slow, too bad, get it fixed. The peer pressure from other truckers keeps this situation self-regulating.

Trucks are required to move to the left lane in order to stay on southbound US 23. Trucks are 10 mph slower by state law. Trucks require much more stopping distance than passenger cars; the problem is exacerbated by cars jumping into the gap trucks are using to stay safe. Physics...simply physics...

You mean there are short entrance ramps for SOUTHBOUND traffic? The only one I know about is the short acceleration lane for traffic getting onto northbound US-23 from North Territorial Road.

Hope everyone is OK. I also wish just 50% of the drivers out there would show they are capable of thinking as if they had a brain!
