5-car crash shuts down northbound U.S. 23 in Ann Arbor
Update: The freeway has been reopened, a dispatcher said at 3:25 p.m. Thursday.
A five-car crash reported on U.S. 23 near Washtenaw Avenue has closed the northbound lanes of the freeway, a dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The freeway was being shut down about 1:45 p.m. Thursday after the crash, the dispatcher said. It was not clear whether injuries were involved.
A Nixle alert message from the Sheriff's Office said traffic would be detoured for an undetermined amount of time.
A Google traffic map showed traffic backed up all the way to Interstate 94.
No further information was immediately available.

Apparently the five-car crash took place an hour or less after I got onto northbound US-23 from eastbound Washtenaw. I don't blame the cloverleaf or simpler ramps surrounding it for this accident; lanes must be traded fast between drivers getting on US-23 and those getting off, just like other cloverleaf intersections. But the Christmas season may have brought more drivers to the area, intent on getting bargains, undaunted by weather reports; I was intent on one in this area for days, myself. Crowded Washtenaw Avenue, plus a crowded US-23, equals collisions.

"Update: The freeway has been reopened, a dispatcher said at 5:25 p.m. Thursday." 5:25pm still 2 hours away. Might want to correct that.

Indeed, that should have been 3:25 p.m. That's been corrected.

It's from the future! The space/time continuum is starting to tear as the end of the world nears. Also, probably just a typo.

I use that exit entrance fairly regularly. It is designed for average to good drivers. If one is a mediocre to poor driver problems can ensue. Don't slow down till your in the exit lane, don't try to enter the freeway at 45 MPH.

The on and off ramps there are terrible. It needs something similar to the ramps at 23 & 59 or 94 & Telegraph. Instead we got some cute little city scaping and walkways.

Also, God forbid anyone accelerates to more than 30 mph when entering onto a highway in this town. I swear I have no idea how some people have survived on the road as long as they have....

I'm totally in agreement with you Alex. Who teaches these idiots how to drive? There should be signs on entrance ramps that say "speed up..."

Just like the bridge may be icy signs, there should be signs at the 5 mile mark on all freeways coming to Ann Arbor. They should read "beware frequent accidents" Or "beware of morons"

Why do so many blame the roads when ignorant drivers get into accidents? At 12:30 I was going east on M-14 when everyone came to a stop ahead. Brake lights was all you could see. But still one idiot almost runs into the rear of me then passes on the right then back in left lane before slowing down. Making excuses is what the weak and lame do!

I was going west on M-14, between the tripledeckers, at that time and saw an ambulance in the eastbound lanes.

Not the best that's for sure. In 45 years of driving in this area I have never had even a close call there. One must pay attention at all times to their surroundings and what "might" another driver attempt to do.

It's the worst if people enter going 35 mph and others, either don't use turn signals or enter going 35 mph.
