5 charged in Ypsilanti Township prostitution sting

By Amalie Nash

Five people arrested during a prostitution sting Tuesday on East Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti Township have been charged.

Washtenaw County sheriff's officials say the sting was conducted in response to business owners' complaints. The area is notorious for prostitution, police say.

Police say several people approached the deputies for sexual acts and were arrested throughout the day.

Those arrested include:

• Percy Lee Frame Jr., 38, charged with prostitution and accosting/soliciting. Held on 10 percent of $10,000 bond.

• Karen Yvonne Austin, 51, charged with prostitution and accosting/soliciting. Held on 10 percent of $10,000 bond.

• Heather Leah Deborde, 34, charged with prostitution and accosting/soliciting. Held on 10 percent of $10,000 bond.

• Melissa Susan Kirk, 23, charged with prostitution and accosting/soliciting. Held on 10 percent of $10,000 bond.

• Andrea Kakea Terry, 29, charged with prostitution and accosting/soliciting. Held on 10 percent of $10,000 bond.

All were arraigned and have pre-trial hearings Dec. 17.

Hey Karen you really should not say Percy set you up. That is a lie. He was just trying to get his money just the same we all were. I don't know what happened at your room that morning but I do know for a FACT that Percy DID NOT SET YOU UP. He just wanted money on the floor to be able to do his thing. The police were out that day to get anyone and anybody and happened to get all us. If we were not being stupid being out there to begin with then we would not of been caught. I may not even like Percy but, I feel truth is truth and lies are lies. I hope you found your daughter and she is home and off the streets. I also know that you are not guilty. You just wanted to find your daughter. I spent the whole two weeks with you. I watched you cry for her and I was there for you. So I wish you the best in the future. As for me I will not be coming to that part of town any time EVER. I feel pretty good and I think I have learned my lesson.

Karen, quick question... how did Percy set you up? Maybe I'm just not understanding your whole point of the story. But I do know for a fact that the police do not just come into a random hotel room and arrest someone for doing nothing. You obviously had been watched by the police. Also, if Percy was setting you up why did he too get arrested?

I was one of the ones that got arrested. First of all you people do not know me. I don't stay at those hotels. My daughter has been missing for 7 weeks. Yes I have filed a missing persons report, no nothing has been done. I heard a friend of hers was killed walking the ave, I have also heard another was beat in the head with a hammer. I work, I go to school, I am appauled because my ride did not show up, someone offered to get me a ride home and bam instantly I was in my hotel room, packing my things, got arrested, when I did not even talk to the person in the car, Percy set me up. I will fight this. I won't be charged for something I have never done would never consider doing. I have excellent character witnesses. I am a concerned mother who was desperately trying to find her daughter, who yes I do not condone what she does but that does not stop my love for her. It is the holidays, I have no parents anymore due to a drunk driver. Imagine the turmoil and heartache one goes through. Try being told by the arresting officer you can't have your perscription glasses, you can't have your leather purse or your coat. That is wrong. I sat for 2 weeks got out on a PR bond, I will do the probation, I will be drug tested, I will pass. Hopefully because I was working for a temp agency and in this economy I can't find a full time job that won't hurt my chances. I have excellent referencese and I am a good person. So for the justice system watch out, I intend to go back to school so I can help the people who are not getting the proper help they need. Sincerely, Karen

The real victim is capitalism by making illegal the world's oldest profession, and the state looses an ability to collect income taxes on something already done. Whether the providers do it to support a drug habit, a family, or kick themselves off of said habit, it is their choice.

Finally, names of the people. This is what needs to happen. People see this as a victimless crime. It is not. Many of these women do this to pay for drugs not to support a family. This is not something I would promote in my community. Sure times are hard but people do this when times are not hard also. So don't blame the economy for this. This IS crime no matter how trivial people may think.

People give advice to the police because their salary and budget are derived entirely from our tax dollars. I thought this was obvious.

It is kind of weird that something which is legal to do for free is not legal to do for money.

Well, at least the 51 yr old prostitute probably doesn't have to worry about using protection.....

I have seen these people hanging out at Meadow Ridge Apartments(Riley CT)... We should just legalize prostitution and crack dealing and zone a district for such. Riley ct, perhaps? What good is it going to do to house these people in the washtenaw jail. I'm sure they won't be able to afford bail. At least if prostitution was legal they would be checked for disease like in Germany and Holland and Nevada.

Why is it that people always give advice to the police? I dont give my dentist pointers on teeth cleaning or root canals. My doctor and I dont argue over surgery procedures either.

Throw the book at them! They need help, not jail. Can't the police catch any real criminals?
