Washtenaw County swine flu vaccination clinics set for high-priority groups

By Tina Reed

Swine flu vaccination clinics will be starting this week in Washtenaw County for those in the highest priority groups.

Last week, the county announced it needed to more narrowly define who's included in the high priority groups because the amount of vaccine delivered at this point was much lower than originally anticipated.

The people who are in those high-priority groups are:

  • Children younger than 5 but older than 6 months.
  • Young people ages 5 through 24 who have an underlying health condition placing them at greater risk for having complications from the flu.
  • Household caregivers of children 6 months old and younger.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Health care workers who work directly in patient care.

Unless otherwise specified, people who are in the highest-priority groups are eligible to receive the vaccination no matter where they live in the county, county officials have said. Those who attend flu clinics will need to show they live in the county.

Those in the priority groups may be encouraged to prove their eligibility, but most will not be forced to, the health department said.

For instance, if a person is a health care worker, they can show items such as their ID badge, a pay stub or even a note to show their employment. Parents of children who are in the highest-priority group will not have to show documentation to prove their child's illness, the health department said.
