Age might not matter as Dingell and Conyers eye return to Congress

By Ryan J. Stanton

Reps. John Dingell and John Conyers, the two longest-tenured members of the U.S. House, have spent a combined 104 years in Washington.

And if polls and experts are to be believed, each octogenarian will return to Congress for at least one more term, MLive.com reported on Monday.

"When people consider candidates, age is way down on the list," political strategist Joe DiSano told MLive. "It's all about effectiveness, and both Conyers and Dingell are at the upper ranks in Congress."

Conyers, an 83-year-old from Detroit, is running against four other Dems in Michigan's new 13th congressional district.

Dingell, an 86-year-old from Dearborn, faces 25-year-old University of Michigan student Daniel Marcin of Ann Arbor in the new 12th congressional district.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It isn't about age, it is more about a couple of old guys, who will never have to pay for all of the freebees they are giving their constituents. The old joke about "free ice cream for everyone, fits both of these guys to a tee. Being conservative is "hard work"...being progressive/liberal is easy! Everyone uses something someone else has worked for! Need health care? Free! (unless your work for a living)..don't like a political stance, you must be a something-phobe, racist, nazi etc.,. These guys have given away the future of any young person willing to work for a living - to those that don't have to or want to. Yes, easy to be Dingle or Conyers so long as it is free!

My father rightly ceded his car keys when he reached that age.

Interesting, AA.com appears to be hacked on this article and this article alone. Getting multiple offers for "twitter feeds" and "linked in" with blocked comments. Moderator: take a look please. Thank you.

As questionable as who the Democrats offer may be in ways, their candidates are almost always the lesser of two evils when compared to who the Republicans have to offer.... And when keeping the least of two evils out is the most viable option (compared to voting for a usually unwinnable yet better third Party candidate), I think is says a lot why many Democrats (as right-leaning as many increasingly have become) continue to be elected....

This is the best that the democrats have to offer?

Why was my comment removed? Because I stated facts about John Conyers' lack of character and integrity? Because I mentioned the fraud perpetrated by he and his convicted-felon wife when they secured a taxpayer-funded court-appointed attorney for her in her felony trial? How do either of these facts supported by public record violate the conversation guidelines?

If these two relics get re-elected then their constituents get what they deserve. Just don't complain about the state of country.

One would think that with the current republican congress, and it's looking like it will stay that way post-2014, Michiganders would be smart to look for a change and an opportunity to participate in House affairs. Instead, it's break out the Lawrence Welk with Conyers, Dingell and Levin. Guess it "Depends" on whether you cling to the past or move on.

Sorry but age does matter. You only have to listen to them speak for any period of time to realize neither is up for the job.

At least the Dinosaur Dingell has not been Convicted of anything, Conyer's is a convicted criminal and "Slum Lord" yet still gets re-elected! Nothing like a Democrat who stands tough against crime!

I guess being a Democrat has privileges. No matter what your age is, no matter what your positions have been, as well as, no matter whether you helped the state and country or not, your re-election is almost guaranteed in Michigan. What a shame!

Why change? They've done a great job over the years and can take full credit for the state of the country and the status quo. That's why we have emergency manager laws, automatic 10% across the board spending cuts, out of control spending, more people on welfare than ever before, teen unemployment of 25%, entitlement programs and pensions that we can never afford to honor. I say more of the same..........evntually everything will come to a screeching halt anyhore because we'll run out of taxpayer money to spend, no one will loan us anymore, and if we keep printing money it will become worthless. And Dingell and Conyers won't have to worry about. Pull the D lever and keep the train rolling..............
