Aging workforce, teaching faculty could contribute to nursing shortage in Michigan

As a significant portion of both the nursing workforce and nursing faculty in Michigan approach retirement age, a nursing shortage could be looming in the state, Bridge Magazine reported.

By 2018, the state projects a 21 percent rise in demand for registered nurses and a 20 percent rise in demand for licensed practical nurses, according to the report.

Those figures do not account for the additional 350,000 individuals that could gain health insurance under Medicaid expansion.

Some nursing schools across the state continue to experience waiting lists for admission to their programs.

As older nursing faculty members begin a wave of retirements, it may be difficult for nursing schools to fill those spots: Salaries for nursing faculty members lag far behind that of what a nurse could earn in a hospital setting, Bridge Magazine reported.

Why would you take a faculty position to make less money than those you train to become nurses that make more money, granted teaching is rewarding and satisfying but it doesn't pay the bills.

How about things like better hours, less stress, a chance to take breaks, eat your meals, and numerous other things that many nurses often don't have ? Are you kidding about the money - do you have any idea what universities are paying for in demand positions, when there is a nation-wide shortage?

Bogus story - those in healthcare leadership positions have been speaking about this "issue" for decades. Nursing industry wants to keep shortages in vogue - economic benefit of higher salaries is behind this practice. Any healthcare economist worth his salt will tell you this.

Is this a true shortage that could encourage more people to train for those jobs or is it related to salaries? Several years ago, the insistence about needing to bring more nurses to the United States may have been a ploy to hold pay rates down.
