One of the men arrested in connection with a gunfight early Saturday at the Elks Lodge in Ypsilanti Township is being held on a $100,000 cash bond, according to Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office officials.

Leon Freeman, 23, was arrested Saturday afternoon after the shooting in the parking lot of the Elks Lodge, 1405 Ecorse Road.

Three men and Freeman suffered injuries following the gunfight, said sheriff’s office spokesperson Derrick Jackson.

Freeman has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and one felony firearms charge.

Police say Freeman was one of two shooters that night. Freeman turned himself in to police after calling detectives while on his way to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

If convicted of assault with intent to murder, Freeman faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

A second man also was taken into custody: A 48-year-old Ann Arbor man was arrested at the Elk’s Lodge on Saturday morning as the investigation began. It is unclear if he has been arraigned on any charges.

Police responded to the Elk’s Lodge at 2:14 a.m. Saturday morning after deputies were flagged down by witnesses at the scene, according to police. The deputies were notified of three gunshot victims at St. Joe’s by the hospital as they began investigating the reports of the gunfight, Jackson said.

The men who were shot did not suffer life-threatening injuries, Jackson said.

Police have not released any potential reasons for the gunfight, which was reported to be just between Freeman and the Ann Arbor man. Jackson said Saturday police had never received reports of altercations at the Elk’s Lodge before the shooting took place.

There was no one at the Elks Lodge available to comment on the incident Monday afternoon.

The lodge is home to the Harry G. Parks Lodge #1681 and Anna G. Parker Temple #1283, according to state records. The nonprofit operates under a "club" liquor license, which allows it to sell to members only.

It should be noted these were rogue Elks, a schismatic offshoot of the mainstream, not to be confused with outlaw Knights, ersatz Shriners, or counterfeit Lions.

Given our prosecutor's record, his lawyer can probably plea it down to a $50 fine and a 6 month probation.

An ELK is an ELK not a Deer. There are 4 seasons, none in November. (Aug 30th.- Sept 2nd. Sept.23rd-26th. Dec. 3rd. -11th. and Jan. 18th. - 22nd. Real injured ELK's go to an Animal Hospital, not St. Joseph Mercy Hospital! If convicted, Freeman goes to Prison. I have doubts that this fight started inside the lodge.

What also is not disclosed is whether the shooters or injured victims were members of the Elks Lodge and whether the icident had anything to do with the business of the Elks. The Elks are a fraternal order who have a policy of benevolence so it is shocking to see these types of violent activities at their lodge.

Firearm deer season isn't until November. Elk are deer, right?
