Ann Arbor among top 25 best places to live for the rich and single

By AnnArbor.com Staff

If you're rich and single, Ann Arbor is the place to be.

So says CNN Money Magazine, which ranked our city No. 21 on the list of the 25 best places to live for the rich and single.

The explanation topping the article: We're not saying you're a gold digger. But you could follow the money to these 25 affluent cities, where singles are abundant.

Main Street Traffic

Downtown Ann Arbor has plenty of hotspots for the rich and single.

So why Ann Arbor?

CNN Money explains:

"The University of Michigan Wolverines may be a rowdy bunch, but Ann Arbor has plenty to offer beyond sports nuts. Bookworms might find romance at Borders' flagship location ... On one of the town's frigid winter days, check out Ann Arbor's Hands-On Museum ... then stay warm at one of the local microbreweries such as Arbor Brewing Co., which takes an eco-friendly approach to making beer."

The richness and singleness of Ann Arbor are noted in figures showing 47.7 percent of the city's 116,107 residents are single, and the median family income is $92,992.

The No. 1 place in the nation to be affluent and unattached: Newport Beach, Calif.

Do you agree? Is Ann Arbor a great place to be if you're rich and single?

What is considered rich? Someone who has a full time paying position to someone who unemployed may consider them rich. Give me a break Ann Arbor is only worth living here for about 6 months out of the year, and I wouldn't consider this place paradise by no stretch of immagination. Again CNN only considers A2 in the top 25 due to the fact that they are as liberal infested like Berkely or SF, CA, they obvisouly (CNN) haven't been driving on the local roads lately, that in itself would drop them around 150.

@ ERIC MEYERS, I feel really bad for you and would like to extend an invite to you to join d and me my fellow liberals for a beer. Perhaps we can help you find work? Ann Arbor is a wonderfully liberal and diverse place. While, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around why you hate it so much, I understand that some folks are just never happy. BTW, I had a great time at the Art Fair, I bought a stoneware pot, a tie-dye t-shirt, and got my Birkenstocks resoled down on fourth avenue. Let me know, if I can still take you out for a beer, Mr. Meyers.

I've always said A2 is a rich person's town.

Hey My Mayor we do not need more parking structures. We do not need a rail system. The city refuse to maintain roads and sidewalks among other things and even will not enforce the laws the city has on the books. that in no way is a fair minded city. When are things like this to be dealt with People of Ann Arbor it is time to stand up and stop the all the constant new building with in the city that's not needed.

@ ERIC MEYERS, Nuts? I'm nuts because your experience of Ann Arbor and the economic downturn is negative compared to mine? Now, you blame or Mayor? Who is really nuts here? I can't wait to go out (AFTER WORK) and spend hundreds of dollars at the Art Fair. Too bad you can't help support the economy as well.

Well who ever replied to my note your nutz if you think ann arbor has jobs. What really needs to happen is lay off the city council and the Mayor to. Then we could hire more police and keep the fireman.

In contrast, AA is the third worst place to live on the "Poor and Ugly" list.

The other nice thing about Ann Arbor is the Michigan economy. A little money goes a long way. You can get people to fulfill almost any sick desire you have for a quick buck. Life is cheap here.

Are there any great places to live if you are poor and single? I'll bet no one does articles on that...

@Topcat, Ann Arbor Public Schools are some of the best in the country. The city isn't just a great place to live if you're rich and single (like A2Grateful says, everywhere is a great place to live if you're rich and single), it's a great place to live at any age. Granted, there are examples of how the city could improve, but that is the case everywhere.

Ann Arbor is a great place for all ages. In fact, dare I say, that when I was poor and single I moved to Chicago and later New York before getting married and moving back to A2 where I am now middle class and married. I think the story glosses over the fact that we have a huge influx of single (college students) funded by their (rich parents) taking over our fair city every fall.

This piece illustrates the idiocy of these "rankings" done by writers at national magazines who at most may have breezed through here but who seem to have based their findings on promotional websites like the CVB and Chamber of Commerce. "47.7% of of the city's 116,107 residents are single" First, that population figure is at odds with latest estimates. But did the writers know how many of those are college students? I'm trying to imagine these presumably sophisticated and glamorous rich single people hanging out at the Hands-On Museum amid the flocks of first-graders. Reviewing the selections, many of them make some sense (San Jose, Newton, Mass) but apparently the very premise of the story is to take the number of single people and divide by the area *family* income (our one-person household AMI is lower than stated in the article) and voila! rich single people! I suspect that many of the high rankings Ann Arbor receives in various publications are based on similar high-quality research. Not that I don't love the place, but these rankings don't prove facts on the ground.

Although A2 is a nice place to live if you're older and married, I think it's a known fact, Topcat, that the school system in Ann Arbor is of top quality. It's an attraction to many people to move here, and I'm told the U of M extols the excellence of the school education here when recruiting married (some already with children) faculty.

I believe the original idea was a good starting point: "If you're rich and single, Ann Arbor is the place to be." "If you're rich and single, any place is the place to be." "If you're rich and single, every place is the place to be." (Evolution continues with an existential twist...) "If you are alive, you are the best place to be."

This makes sense. It's great if you are older and married as well. As a place to live, I would never have considered living there to raise children.
