Ann Arbor boy suffers burn on hand in fire
An 11-year-old Ann Arbor boy suffered a burn to his hand in an early morning fire.
According to the Ann Arbor Fire Department, firefighters arrived at a house in the 200 block of Wildwood around 6 a.m. Friday to find a second-floor bedroom filled with smoke.
Firefighters were able to put the fire out and limit damage to $400.
The investigation showed a night light came in contact with bedding material and started a slow-burning fire.
The boy burned his hand getting out of bed, fire officials said.
The smoke detector in the bedroom and the hallway both sounded and alerted the family.

Extremely thorough analysis should be done to understand required staffing levels, response times, etc. -- before reducing firefighter staffing and equipment. We truly must err on the side of caution. That said, nothing is sacrosanct -- if the numbers show that Ann Arbor can be adequately protected with fewer active firefighters and equipment, then we should make cuts there just like we would anywhere else in city government.
