Ann Arbor City Clerk: Expect construction at Tappan and Thurston polling places on Election Day

By Ryan J. Stanton

Ann Arbor officials say voters used to casting their ballots at Tappan Middle School and Thurston Elementary School should be aware of parking lot construction during Tuesday's primary election.

Voters at Tappan are encouraged to enter the polling place using the west entrance of Brockman.

The parking lot at Thurston won't be available to voters. Instead, parking will be available on Prairie Street and a marked path will direct voters to the main entrance.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and a handful of new polling places will be in place.

As reported by AnnArbor.com in May, all polling places previously located in University of Michigan dormitories have been moved to other on-campus locations due to university housing safety concerns.

In addition, Skyline High School at 2552 N. Maple Road has become a polling place, replacing the former Mack School location.

New voter registration cards were mailed to affected voters.

To find out your polling location, visit the Michigan Votes online voter information center at www.michigan.gov/vote.

Here are 11 voter tips from the city clerk:

  • Voters should not wear buttons, T-shirts, or any visible apparel or signage that supports a candidate into the polling places on Election Day - it's considered campaigning, which is not allowed within 100 feet of a polling location. Voters who visibly display a candidate’s picture or name will be asked to remove the material while standing in line or voting.
  • Don’t forget to bring your photo ID to vote. Voters who do not have acceptable photo ID will be required to sign an affidavit to vote.
  • Peak voting hours are from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Voters who want to avoid long lines are encouraged to vote during mid-day hours.
  • Polling place hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. If you are standing in line by 8 p.m., you are eligible to vote.
  • The City Clerk’s Office is still accepting applications for absentee ballots. In-person requests for absentee ballots will be accepted at the City Clerk’s Office, 2nd floor of City Hall, until 4 p.m. today.
  • Ann Arbor Public Schools are closed on Election Day. Polling places located within schools are open. Signs will be posted at all polling locations to assist voters.
  • The Aug. 3 election is a primary. Voters can only vote for candidates in one party — Republican or Democrat; crossover voting isn't allowed.
  •  Election Frequently Asked Questions can be viewed on the elections page on the city’s website at www.a2gov.org/elections.
  • Verify your voter registration status or locate your polling location at www.michigan.gov/vote.
  •  Voters can look up their voter registration and view their ballots at www.michigan.gov/vote or visit www.a2gov.org/elections for more information on the city’s elections.
  • Washtenaw County election results are televised on Community Television Network’s CitiTV Channel 19 beginning at 10 p.m. on Tuesday and will continue throughout the night.
