New York Times: Ann Arbor featured in look at Michigan's growing medical marijuana industry

Ann Arbor was featured as part of a video aimed at exploring the growing medical marijuana industry since Proposal 1 made marijuana use for medical purposes legal in the state last year.

One student looking to become a caregiver and patient in the medical marijuana system took a course offered by the company named Oaksterdam University, which has offered courses in Ann Arbor on how to legally and safely cultivate marijuana. According to its Web site, Oaksterdam last offered a course in Ann Arbor from Sept. 5-7.

The New York Times story focused on Med Grow Cannabis College in the Detroit area, which offers 6-week training course in understanding the legal and horticultural aspects of growing medical marijuana - as well as how to use it in edibles.

CNBC ran a special last night on marijuana cultivation in California.
Check out how much is paid in taxes on medical marijuana purchases in California each year.
One business alone paid $300,000 in state taxes and more than double that in federal taxes.
Seems like universal health care could be fully funded by the legalization of marijuana.
The vast majority of users will buy it at the store just like they do with beer and bread.
Ah....Capitalism!
Why didn't we think of that in the seventies?

For a variety of reasons, we have outsourced to other countries much of our energy production, manufacturing and growing of recreational drugs. It is time to bring all of them back to the USA and creates jobs for our people. Drill here! Build it here! Grow it here!

This has strong parallels to Prohibition. During Prohibition, the federal government collected no tax on alcohol, but was saddled with the cost of enforcement. Maybe we can sell this as a revenue enhancement and cost reduction.

Wait, this idea will make some people so angry they will spill their drink, swear, and light up a cigarette.

Note to Tina Reed: Please fix "system took at course offered." It's buggin' me for some reason. Thanks.

According to a nov 16 article in Annarbor.com LAWNET seized more than 600 times amount of marijuana compared to cocaine. Perhaps if marijuana was less of a priority our police officers could focus on the hard drugs which i assume have something to do with the high level of home invasions reported. Of course the crack dealers carry guns not granola but that is what those guys signed up for. If not, they should have joined the fire department.
