Ann Arbor Huron High School Top Scholars

Ann Arbor Huron High School will hold its 2013 graduation ceremonies June 5, 6 p.m. at the EMU Convocation Center. The class includes 360 graduates.

Kelsey Aaronson
Parents: Keith and Susan Aaronson
Activities and Awards: Kelsey was a member of the National Honor Society, Executive Board and Jewish Student Union. She was a National AP scholar. Kelsey was a four year volleyball and lacrosse player, earning 3 Varsity letters in each sport and was voted co- captain of the lacrosse team in her senior year. She received an All-State Honorable Mention and was named to the SEC 2nd team in Lacrosse. In volleyball she set the Huron career dig record and received Honorable Mention in the SEC. She was a four year scholar athlete. Kelsey volunteered with her church, participating in service/mission trips to Pittsburgh, New Mexico, Jamaica and will be in Costa Rica this summer. Additionally, she has volunteered at various non-profits in Ann Arbor and Detroit. In addition to babysitting, she worked as an Ann Arbor Recreation and Education volleyball referee for four years.
Plans After Graduation: Kelsey will be attending Northwestern University.

Marissa Avila
Parents: Kathy & Scott Miller / Umberto & Rebecca Avila
Activities and Awards: Marissa plays many sports all year round. She has played travel hockey for nine years. The sports that make up Marissa’s life are AAA Travel Elite Girls Ice Hockey, travel soccer, Varsity golf, volleyball, and softball. She also surfs, as well as snowboard. Marissa has participated in the Habitat for Humanities (construction), as well as volunteered for a summer day camp for special needs kids. She has received a variety of awards due to sports. Some of her greatest accomplishments are Tier one AAA Girls Hockey Nationals and States awards, along with tournament MVP’s, and the 2011 Sportsmanship award. At the end of her first year playing varsity golf she received the first ever, Rookie of the Year Award. Finally, at her first BPA event I won 4th place, and qualified for BPA States.
Plans After Graduation: Marissa will continue to attend Washtenaw Community College, Majoring in Graphic Design, then transferring to University of Michigan Dental School.

Jungsoo Chang
Parent: Inhan Lee
Activities and Awards: Jungsoo was a member of National Honor Society, and was the vice president of Key Club. She founded Green Team with her friends, which re-implemented the single-stream recycling in Ann Arbor Public schools with the help of Recycle Ann Arbor. She was the president of GIDAS (Genes in Diseases and Symptoms) which raised awareness and funds for the research of chosen diseases. She participated in Southeast Michigan Science Fair and won 2nd place in botany and high school team category. Jungsoo was recently named National Merit Finalist and AP Honor Scholar with Distinction. She was a violist section leader for Huron Symphony Orchestra and had played with Michigan Youth Arts Festival Honors Orchestra. Outside of school, she is a computational biology research volunteer at miRcore. Plans After Graduation: Jungsoo will be attending University of Michigan to study Biomedical Engineering.

Domenic DiGiovine
Parents: Stephanie and Bruno DiGiovine
Activities and Awards: Dom is a current captain on the Huron Baseball team. He was awarded All District, Academic All District, and Academic All State Honors as a junior. He is the treasure for Huron’s Symphony Band, where he has been a member of the clarinet section for three years. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a news editor on Huron’s student newspaper: The Emery, and an AP Scholar with Honor.
Plans After Graduation: Dom will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall. He will be a member of the LSA honors college and hopes to pursue a degree in biochemistry.

Molly Gelb
Parents: Doug Gelb and Karen Kluin
Activities and Awards: Molly was an AP Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society and the 2013 Class Executive Board. She was a diver on the Huron Girls Swim/Dive Team, earning a varsity letter and receiving a Scholar Athlete Award each of her four years. Molly was voted captain of the swim/dive team her senior year and she received the Most Valuable award as a senior. She received All-Conference, All-State and All-American Diving Honors her junior and senior years. Molly dives year-round for Legacy Diving Club where she has competed at the state and regional levels. She is also a ballet dancer with the CAS Ballet Theatre School and Ann Arbor Ballet Company. In the summers, Molly enjoys lifeguarding and teaching children how to dive.
Plans After Graduation: Molly will be studying and diving at Brown University.

Suraj Jaipalli
Parents: J.R. Bapuraj and P. Sujata Rao
Activities and Awards: Suraj Jaipalli served as the first president of the Huron Red Cross Club. He will serve as the Health and Safety Education Committee Chair at University of Michigan Red Cross Club in the fall. He is also the captain of the Huron Ocean Bowl Team and is the recipient of the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences 2011 Book Award winner for their academic and research accomplishments in the Earth and Space Sciences. The summer after freshman year, Suraj volunteered in the patient services department at Narayana Nethralaya Hospital in India. Suraj attended the C-PHOM high-school research program at the University of Michigan last summer. He continues to do his research on self-assembly as a student researcher in the Mechanosynthesis Lab at the University of Michigan. He is the member of the Business Professionals of America Team which represented the school at the National Level. He also is on the Huron Science Olympiad Team which qualified for states twice in the past four years. Suraj likes to watch sports listen to music, hike and cycle.
Plans After Graduation: Suraj will attend the University of Michigan, College of Engineering.

Graham Keep
Parents: Richard and Yi Keep
Activities and Awards: He was a part of the National Honor Society and the club Interact. Graham was also a part of the Symphony Orchestra for two years in which they were invited to the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. He also was a part of the Varsity Soccer team for three years in which they won a District Title. Graham also played for the club team Waza F.C., and won three State Championships. He also participated in the Olympic Development Program where he won two National Championships and two Regional Titles while also being named to the National All-Star team one year.
Plans After Graduation: Attending the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Major undecided.

Eva Koester
Parents: Heidi and Dan Koester
Activities and Awards: Eva was an active member of Huron’s figure skating team, earning four varsity letters. She was voted captain for her junior and senior years and won the Jean Birkowitz award for outstanding leadership and dedication on her team. Eva also took regular ballet classes at a local dance studio and danced in several showcases. She enjoys art and had one of her pieces selected for a student art show at Slusser Galleries. Eva was an active member of the National Honor Society and also volunteered with her church, going on yearly service trips, building and renovating homes for people in need. Some awards Eva has received are the University of Michigan AOSS Book Award for excellence in Science and Engineering, AP Scholar, and two gold medals at the Michigan state championships for figure skating.
Plans After Graduation: In the fall Eva will be attending the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Christa Kuck
Parents: Don and Laurie Kuck
Activities and Awards: Christa was named a South Eastern Conference All-Academic Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Christa was a member of the Women’s Cross Country team her junior and senior years, elected captain this past year. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has served as its Secretary for the past two years. Christa started her own house-cleaning business while in high school, which she works on weekends. Christa has volunteered at Glacier Hills for two years, this year receiving their Youth Service Award. Christa has been a volunteer coach for Girls on Run for three years. In her free time, Christa loves running and reading.
Plans After Graduation: Christa plans to attend St. Olaf College in the fall.

Kaushal Kulkarni
Parents: Kumar and Asha Kulkarni
Activities and Awards: Kaushal was a member of the National Honors Society. He was also the President of the Interact Club and the Cricket Club, Vice-President of the Medical Science Club, and the Treasurer of Business Professionals of America. As a member of Business Professionals of America, he was a State Champion last year, and will be attending Nationals this May. Kaushal is also a regular volunteer at the University of Michigan health system and has accumulated over 400 hours of volunteering in High School.
Plans After Graduation: Kaushal will be attending the Stephen M. Ross Business School at the University of Michigan, concentrating in Finance.

JuJu Miao
Parents: Hong Chen and Shuxia Miao
Activities and Awards: JuJu was a member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar with Distinction. She has also won two gold medals for National Latin Exams I and II. She was recently nominated for the Southeastern Conference All-Academic Award. She was also a student editor for the Best-American Non-Required Reading Anthology at 826 Michigan and volunteered as a Teaching Assistant for the Drawing and Sketching class at AnnHua Chinese School on Sundays.
Plans After Graduation: JuJu will be attending Northwestern University and going into Business.

Valerie Peng
Parents: Hueichun (mom) and Huei (dad) Peng
Activities and Awards: Valerie was President of Huron’s National Honor Society and also a National Merit Scholarship winner. She has played the violin for 13 years, and has competed in and won many regional concerto competitions, including the 2012 Toledo Young Artists’ Competition. She has played for the Varsity Tennis Team since freshman year, and is a co-captain for the current season. In addition, Valerie is Vice-President of the Huron Chess Club, and has enjoyed playing on the team for four years. Valerie also loves to volunteer her time tutoring and working with kids in academics, violin, and chess.
Plans After Graduation: Valerie will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study Engineering.

Lilia Popova
Parents: Antonia Popova and Chavdar Popov
Activities and Awards: Lilia was a member of the National Honor Society, president of Key Club, and was a Girls on the Run coach. She was a National Merit Finalist and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Lilia won first in the Botanical Sciences category at the Southeast Michigan Science Fair for two years, qualifying her for the Michigan State Science Fair which she won in 2012. Lilia placed third in Plant Sciences at the 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and was a 2013 Intel Science Talent Search Finalist. She is a current member of the Raymond and Schiefelbein Labs at the University of Michigan, where she works on a developmental biology project and her independent research, respectively. In addition to research, Lilia was also actively involved in the Choral department for four years and is a member of the A Cappella and Chamber Choirs.
Plans After Graduation: Lilia will be attending Stanford University in the fall and hopes to pursue studies in Biology and Environmental Science, eventually aspiring to attain an M.D./Ph.D.

Hannah Schapiro
Parents: Brian and Margot Schapiro
Activities and Awards: Hannah enjoyed being involved in the community. She served on a board at the YMCA and volunteered at the soup kitchen. She was a member of the National Honor Society and played for four years on the girls lacrosse team. She was an AP Scholar with Honors.
Plans After Graduation: Hannah will be attending the University of Michigan next year.

Jon Seyhun
Parents: Tamara and Nejat Seyhun
Activities and Awards: Jon is a member of multiple clubs including Film and Literature Analysis Club, Weird Science Club, Business Professionals of America, and others. His BPA team won the State Championship last year. Jon is a 3-time Varsity athlete on the state championship tennis team and was elected co-captain his senior year. In his free time he likes to play tennis, golf, and frisbee. Jon likes to volunteer his time teaching tennis to young kids.
Plans After Graduation: Jon plans to attend Northwestern University and major in Economics.

Gabrielle Steinl
Parents: Greg and Diana Steinl
Activities and Awards: Gabby came to Huron in the middle of her junior year. She ran varsity track and cross-country and served as track captain senior year. As a member of Huron’s Green Team she helped bring single-stream recycling to AAPS. Over the summer she volunteered at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Gabby was a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship winner, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a South Eastern Conference All-Academic Scholar. She was also a member of National Honor Society and GIDAS, Genes in Diseases and Symptoms club.
Plans After Graduation: Gabby will be attending Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology.

Mary Taylor
Parents: Janet Taylor and Stephen Taylor
Activities and Awards: Mary was a member of National Honor Society. She was a National Merit Finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction. She also received the SEC All Academic Award and was a finalist in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition. She volunteers for Key Club, Glacier Hills Nursing Home, and the Huron Valley Humane Society. She was a scholar athlete in her freshman and sophomore years.
Plans After Graduation: University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Rosa Wu
Parents: Jian Wu and Wen Liang
Activities and Awards: Rosa was a member of the National Honor Society. She played singles on the women’s varsity tennis team for four years. She won regionals individually at 3rd singles and as a team during her junior year. Rosa also enjoys music and played cello in the Huron Concert and Symphony Orchestras during her four years.
Plans After Graduation: Rosa plans to attend the University of Michigan College of Engineering.
