Ann Arbor Huron High School Top Scholars

Ann Arbor Huron High School held its 2011 graduation ceremonies Wednesday, June 1 at the EMU Convocation Center. The class included 444 graduates.

Joshua Cheng

Parents: Sung-Ping and Sheau-Wei Cheng

Activities and Awards: Joshua was the principal cellist of the Huron Symphony Orchestra. He also plays guitar and bass guitar for his church and plays piano for fun. Joshua was a National Merit Finalist and was one of the nine students at Huron High School who received a perfect score on the ACT. In the summer he has volunteered at Excel Academy, a program for teaching English to children from international families. During his free time Joshua likes to make videos and songs.

Plans after graduation: Joshua will attend the University of Michigan in the fall.

Daniel J. Clegg

Parents: Deborah Heyl-Clegg and Thomas Clegg

Activities and Awards: A violinist, Danny was selected for the American High School Honors Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and the Michigan Youth Honors Orchestra. He has consistently earned First Division ratings at the MSBOA District and State Level Solo and Ensemble Festivals and has been nominated to audition as a soloist for the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. He was a member of the Huron Symphony Orchestra, where he served on the Orchestra Board, and has participated in several ensembles including the Side by Side Chamber Music Program, Huron Celtic Music Club, and several other duets, quartets and chamber groups. Danny was a finalist in Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition and recognized in the Southeast Michigan Science Fair. He was a member of National Honor Society and competed on the crew team, being named a Scholar Athlete. Danny was active in the Orchestra Mentoring Program at Clague Middle School and served as an assistant coach and as a demonstration volunteer for the Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad. He also was named a John Frederick Oberlin Academic Merit Scholar.

Plans after graduation: Danny will pursue a dual degree in violin performance and science at the University of Michigan School of Music and LSA Honors College.

Adam Clover

Parent: Terry Clover and Susan Bos

Activities and Awards: Adam was a National Merit finalist and received a Regents Merit Scholarship from the University of Michigan. He also was a member of the National Honor Society. Adam participated in the MREACH program from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and is a student member of the Institute of Management Accountants. Adam played golf for all four years and played in band, jazz band and orchestra for all four years. In addition, Adam received the Outstanding Student of Mathematics award and placed in the top 200 on the 2010 Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition.

Plans after graduation: Adam will attend the University of Michigan in the fall. He plans to study business.

Noah D. Collins

Parents: Deb and Dave Collins

Activities and Awards: Noah was selected as a National Merit Finalist in addition to receiving the H.H. Rackham Scholarship for Academic Achievement from the University of Michigan. He is a two time silver medalist in the National Latin Exam and recipient of the 2009/2010 Outstandng Youth Award from the Optimists’ Club. His senior year, Noah served as the president of Huron’s A Capella Choir. Noah is an active member of the worship ministry at Huron Hills Church and spends his free time with his youth group.

Plans after graduation: This fall, Noah will attend the Honors College at the University of Michigan to study classical languages and literature.

Elizabeth Gelb

Parents: Karen Kluin and Douglas Gelb

Activities and Awards: Elizabeth was a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship Winner and an AP Scholar with Honor. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the 2011 class executive board. Elizabeth was a four-year member of the Huron High School Girls Varsity Swim and Dive Team, lettering all four years and receiving All-Conference, All-State and All-American Honors. She was voted captain of the swim/dive team in both her junior and senior years. Elizabeth swims year-round for Club Wolverine, where she has competed at the state, regional and national levels. She received the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Award for the past two years. In the summers, Elizabeth enjoys lifeguarding and teaching children how to swim.

Plans after graduation: Elizabeth will attend Princeton University in the fall.

Jay Hack

Parents: Talbot and Jan Hack

Activities and Awards: Early in his high school career, Jay received a full scholarship from the Japanese Business Society of Detroit for summer exchange study in Japan. He would later return to study for a full semester during his junior year and achieve fluency in Japanese. He has conducted research in the artificial intelligence laboratory of Professor Benjamin Kuipers since his sophomore year, focusing on machine learning and computer vision. As a senior, Jay created and maintained a popular social networking site among high school students. He has served as a member of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation's Youth Council for three years and was a member of their board of trustees for one.

Plans after graduation: Jay plans to attend Stanford University, where he will study mathematics and computer science.

Jon Heiselman

Parents: Mark Hiselman and Cassandra Wong

Activities and Awards: Jon received silver medals with maxima cum laude in both 2008 and 2011 in the National Latin Exam. (He received a magna cum laude in 2009 and a cum laude in 2010.) Jon referees youth soccer during the fall and spring seasons and has been practicing to-shin-do ninjitsu, a form of martial arts, since 2009. He was also part of the newly founded Rocketry Club at Huron High School, created in his senior year.

Plans after graduation: Jon will pursue engineering at the University of Michigan.

Heemyung Hwang

Parents: Hyungil and Jung Hwang

Activities and Awards: Heemyung is a National Merit Scholar and a Presidential Scholar semifinalist. She enjoys math and has placed for three years in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition, winning the Top Female Award for the last two. She also likes science and was a semifinalist for the U.S. Physics and Biology Olympiads. Heemyung is involved with math tutoring for high school students. In her free time, she likes to read, figure out puzzles, rollerblade or fly kites.

Plans after graduation: Heemyung plans to attend Harvard University.

Akshay Jetli

Parents: Rajiv and Seema Jetli

Activities and Awards: Akshay is a recipient of the National Merit Scholarship and the University of Michigan Regents Scholarship. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Indian Student Association. Akshay was a four-year varsity cross-country/track athlete and recieved three team all-state academic awards and an individual all-state academic award for cross-country. He served as a student teacher at Chinmaya Mission and as a volunteer at the VA Hospital.

Plans after graduation: Akshay will attend the University of Michigan in the fall, and will major in engineering.

Jean Li

Parents: Meilan Shen and Kaiming Li

Activities and Awards: Jean has taken many leadership roles during her highschool career: she's been a Girl Scout Leader for a fifth grade troop for two years, on the Key Club Board — a large volunteering club —  for two years and a part of the National Honor Society organization for two years. In addition to her school activities such as playing with the Huron Symphony Orchestra, Jean spends time at her tutoring job with Kumon where she has worked for three years now. Furthermore, she qualified as a National Merit Finalist this year and the AP Scholar award her junior year.

Plans after graduation: Jean plans to attend the University of Michigan, where she hopes to pursue a career in pharmacy.

Abigail Mattson

Parents: Steve and Melissa Mattson

Activities and Awards: Abigail (Abbey) was a member of National Honor Society, a board member for Key Club and a volunteer for three years in a second-grade classroom at King Elementary School as part of Key Club's Read and Lead Program. Abbey was selected as a standout student in the math department at Huron her junior year. She was awarded a Regents Gold Scholarship at Eastern Michigan University. Abbey played soccer for two seasons and earned a varsity letter in diving her freshman year. She completed a rigorous three-year leadership training program at Cedarbrook Camp of Ohio, where she is now a summer camp counselor and archery instructor. Abbey has been an active participant in her church youth group during high school and went with them to Tijuana, Mexico, last June on a missions trip.

Plans after graduation: Abbey will attend Eastern Michigan University with plans to double major in Spanish and English.

Crystal Wancheng Rui

Parents: Liangyou Rui and Yin Xu

Activities and Awards: Since her sophomore year, Crystal has been actively conducting research with Professor Jiandie Lin of the Univeristy of Michigan Life Sciences Institute.  In the summer of 2009, she attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. She was a member of the Science Olympiad team and the National Honor Society, and she was selected as a National Merit Scholarship winner. Aside from academics, Crystal enjoys participating in the arts. She is an avid painter, winning third place in the 2010 Michigan Junior Duck Stamp Competition. She also plays piano and viola. She played in the Huron orchestras for all four years, and she is a part of a string quartet with fellow orchestra members Akio Kakishima, Brian Lu and Josh Cheng.

Plans after graduation: Crystal plans to attend the University of Michigan a member of the LSA Honors Program. She expresses a passion for the biological sciences, and she plans to enter the medical field in the future.

Matthew Schulte

Parents: Claire and Jerry Schulte

Activities and Awards: Matt received an award from Google's Ann Arbor branch for excellence in mathematics and science the spring of his junior year and will be participating in Google's CSSI program this summer. Matt rowed on Huron's Crew Team all four years, in both the fall and the spring. He received the Oar of Excellence Award in the spring of his junior year and the Marlotte Award in the fall of his senior year for leadership and commitment to the team. He is captain of the varsity men's team. Matt placed second at states in both the Men's Varsity 4+ and the Men's Varsity 8+, and also placed fourth at Nationals in the Men's Junior Varsity 4+ and the Men's Varsity 4+. Matt also participated in the Huron Symphony and Marching Bands. Outside of school activities, Matt and his identical twin, Mark, run a tech support company, A2TwinTech.

Plans after graduation: Matt will attend the University of Michigan, where he plans to major in computer engineering.

Rebecca Taylor

Parents: Steve and Janet Taylor

Activities and Awards: Rebecca was selected to the U.S. Rowing Scholastic Honor Roll. She was a member of the rowing team for three years and attended national regattas. She played the piano and participated in piano competitions. Rebecca was also a member of Key Club, Executive Board and National Honor Society and serve as vice-president of Book Club.

Plans after graduation: Rebecca will attend MIT in the fall and plans to study either biology or physics.

Derek Wu

Parents: Pu-Yuan Wu and Claire Pei

Activities and Awards: Derek enjoys playing piano in his spare time and was a winner of the 2011 Huron Concerto Concert. He is involved in the math community, serving as president of the Mu Alpha Theta club and volunteering as a teacher at the Ann Arbor Math Olympiad Co-Op. Derek is also the co-captain of the Huron Science Olympiad team, which qualified for states for the first time in four years. He has received the Bronze Award in the Michigan Math Prize Competition for three straight years and has qualified for the American Invitational Math Examination every year since eighth grade. Derek was on the honors list for the United States National Chemistry Olympiad examination. He is also a National Merit Finalist.

Plans after graduation: Derek will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is undecided about his major.

Laura Wu

Parents: Guangquan Wu and Rui Liu

Activities and Awards: Laura is a member of the Symphony Orchestra and the Symphony Band and is currently the band’s secretary. This year she participated in the Honors Band at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. In addition to being a member of the National Honors Society, Laura was also a National Merit Finalist. Laura ran cross country her freshman, sophomore and junior years and was a member of the marching band all four years. She previously participated in the Wolverine Health Explorers Summer Camp and this summer will participate in the Sound of America Honors Band and Choir European Concert Tour. She is a member of the AACCC Youth Group and is the leader of the Praise Band.

Plans after graduation: Laura will attend Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences with the intent to study medicine.

Margaret Wu

Parents: Hwai-Chung Wu and Shiow-Hwa Gau

Activities and Awards: Peggy was a National Merit Finalist and also was a recipient of the Joyce Ivy Foundation Scholarship. She has placed in the Southeast Michigan Science Fair and went on to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. In addition, she is an active member of National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America and Key Club. Peggy placed first in both regional and state competitions of BPA and has served as Treasurer and Vice President of Huron's Key Club chapter. She also plays violin in Huron's Symphony Orchestra and serves as librarian. Over the past summers, she has been selected to intern at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab and to participate in Michigan State University's High School Honors Science Program. Peggy played varsity tennis all four years and served as captain senior year.

Plans after graduation: Peggy plans to attend the University of Michigan.
