Ann Arbor man accused of stabbing another man sentenced to probation
An Ann Arbor man was sentenced to probation for stabbing another man after they bumped into each other on the sidewalk last fall.
Mark Allen Davis was ordered to serve 18 months of probation on one count of assault with a dangerous weapon per a sentencing agreement with county prosecutors, court records show.
He pleaded no contest to the charge in March, which is treated as a guilty plea for sentencing purposes. Prosecutors dropped one count of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder.
Police said Davis, 22, and the victim were each with different groups of people when they bumped into each other in the area of South University and East University avenues at about 1:40 a.m. on Sept. 5. They began fighting, and police say Davis pulled a knife and stabbed the man in the chest and arm. He was hospitalized but recovered from his injuries.
Davis must also meet several conditions, including mandatory drug and alcohol testing, anger management counseling, and pay nearly $2,500 in fines, records stated.

This sends the wrong messege to our young people. You can get stabed on S.University and run into the perp weeks later. Knife Crime = classes or you can pay your way out of jail. So is this the 'new standard penalty' for the charge of disorderly person, assult with intent to do great bodily harm?

I think Zulu is getting to the heart of the matter.

can you explain how someone that actually inflicts harm (that could have resulted in possible death)is only given 18 months of probation while in another case a teenager ends up serving time at a youth facility, then a bootcamp, then 3 months on tether, and then still serve 3 yrs of probation on a first-time offense where nobody was physically injured. It sure does give me a lot of faith in our judicial system. Way to go prosecutor!! They should have possibly considered the bootcamp or something more than just probation.

Dave66: The Perp and Victim were non-African American. JCJ. I'm with you on the last part of your statement.

Let me try this again. While an elementary student gets suspended for drawing a picture of a gun or knife this thug gets nothing! This is grounds enough to vote out the prosecutor next time!

Way to be tough on crime, judge & prosecutor! I feel so much safer knowing you won't prosecute aggressive criminals.

Unfortunately there is no room at the Inn. State Prison budget cuts have changed the standards. Sentencing him to prison would have put him in for about 16 weeks for 'evaluation' and then out on parole where he gets less supervision than probation where he has a scheduled activity (class) to go to. Welcome to the new Michigan. Less cops and no one goes to jail.

This is a totally ridiculous sentence. Guy stabs another person, and gets only 18 months probation? Looks like our Judges and Prosecutors are working hard to ensure that dangerous criminals get the minimum sentences possible. Would, say, 6 to 8 years in State Prison have been too much to ask?

That's it?!!? PROBATION? For stabbing someone in the chest? Well, good thing they threw the book at him. I feel safer already. I'm sure anger management classes will solve the problem. Nothing says, "Hey, don't stab people" quite like going to a class. Oh, and don't forget probation, too. I'm sure he learned his lesson.
