Ann Arbor police: Man to be charged in Monday assault is not serial attacker

By Julie Baker

An 18-year-old man is expected to be charged today or Wednesday with grabbing the buttocks of a woman as she walked down the street in Ann Arbor on Monday, but police don't believe he's a serial attacker, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Police reportedly questioned the man shortly after arresting him for the 5:30 attack, but they don't believe he's responsible for a series of attacks this summer, according to the report.

"Unfortunately, we’re confident it’s not," Ann Arbor Police Detective Sgt. Pat Hughes told the Free Press. "His physical description is close in some respects, but not in other respects. We did interview him at length, and we’re confident he’s not involved in anything else."

The man is expected to be arraigned today or Wednesday on a 4th degree criminal sexual conduct charge, Hughes said. If he's convicted, he could face up to two years in jail.

Would this same 'grabbing buttocks law' wroke for same sex? Or are still hung up on woman not being able to defend themselves? A double standard maybe?

Prison time for grabbing someones butt? The lawyers should just wait outside nicks for future clients.

Yeah weird how a attack on a person differs than a attack on metal. What has society come to.

Pretty crazy, huh? Breaking into over 100 cars in Ann Arbor in one night won't even get you jail time, but touching someone's butt can land you in the slammer for 2 years.

I wonder if there is a connection between the attacker and the author of the daily detailed rape-fantasy posts on craigslist. Have the police looked into that at all? I'm just curious because I think it is important that we thoroughly exhaust all potentialities before things escalate further since the nature of these crimes leave the assailant virtually untraceable.

Wow. I wonder if the non-capture of the serial assailant is setting an example to others that offenders can get away with it.

Sometimes touching is accidental, but not when a person actually grabs the buttocks with his hands. Final answer will come today or tomorrow. Good Job Ann Arbor Police, for the timely manner in which you arrested and questioned the young man.

Huh? Is this a new buttocks-attack? Did it happen yesterday because that is what the Free Press is implying but the AA.com "Previous Story" link is to the old attack. Some clarification please. If there are more attacks in the streets we need to know!

@smokeblwr: This attack did occur on Monday, although police are saying it's not related. We provided the link to our previous coverage so that readers could have easy access to our latest story on the serial attacks. Sorry for any confusion.
