Ann Arbor police are looking for three men reported to be involved in an armed robbery tonight.

Labor camps....now there's a good idea but the unions will never allow it.

Phillip - what exactly is coddling? I mean, what experiences exactly are you talking about in that offenders are having a blast? I've known several people talking of their "lock-up" experiences and theres usually a mention of working their way up the levels for more privelages because of *good behavior*. They had to earn them over time. All they do is "relax and work out" and you say we need to make the prisons "tough" for them. What are your suggestions? Labor camps? Occasional torture? I bet they wouldn't come out even angrier and more jaded than ever.

If crime like this continues to increase, there will have to be increased police patrols, community based precinct centers, and all of the other systems that are set up in cities with more crime. Residents need to be educated to not open up doors with checking who is there, being sure to lock up carefully with double and triple locks, and to have good alarm systems installed. Alarm systems have to be left on day and night, whether home or not. This will increase the work of the police, responding to false alarms, and there will be fines for the false alarms, if there are not already. Inviting Section 8 housing and low income housing into A2, as the DDA is doing, very predictably will lead to more crime, as well as coming from inside and outside of the city, as occurs now. I lived in these types of areas for several years, and that's how it is. DDA is now inviting this into A2, so just be prepared. I realize it is seen as open-minded to love the criminals as oneselves, but there is a price to pay. And that is crime. Just wait until your house is broken into with your child there, in broad daylight. That's when I moved back to A2, but now I can see this will be changed here, as well.

I agree with awakened. our jails are filled with people who are addicts, while more violent criminals are let go early to create more space for drug users. On a side note; The state of michigan spends more money to lock people up in prison, than we do on education. maybe if we provided more opportunities and life skills for lower income people, we wouldn't have to spend so much on prisons. Our country is one of the richest in the world, yet we have more people locked up than any other country in the world.

We would have more prison space and more law enforcement resources if we had a rational drug policy. I agree that AAPD does a good job and will probably catch these folks soon. But what is the point if they are kicked back out on to the streets after a few months.

Criminals are becoming more brazen. They are well armed and prone to violence. They have little fear of the consequences of their criminal behaviors. Our State prisons are codling these antisocials more than ever before and they know this. Our State prisons are easy time for perpertraitors. These criminals are essentially our own home grown terrorists. They kill and create more harm then Osami Bin Laden and his ilk. They go to prison and spend a lot of time relaxing and working out. What we get back in the community is a physically stronger antisocial. More adept at behaving in a violent way. With no fear of our State Correctional system and the consequences of their criminal behaviors. We need to make prisons less comfortable for felons. The Michigan Department Of Corrections is currently trying to push out their Felons at a faster pace then ever before. Priviledges in prison should all be earned by good behavior of inmates and not just given to them.

Johnny is right. More police won't stop a crime like this. Besides, when they catch these guys, and they probably will, the AAPD is good, I bet they live somewhere else. If you want a cop on every corner or a camera on every light post, move to Singapore. I'll take A2 over any city, anywhere.

If there were 100k police officers on duty how would this crime have been prevented? Unless you want to love in a police state crimes will happen.

Aren't they cutting back on police, when conds, itions are worsening? All the sculpture in the world won't make up for that. In addition, if they are building more housing in town, especially "affordable housing" as the Planning Commission approved tonight, they had better double the police force to cover more crime in more densely populated areas. I personally am probably moving out of A2, as I am really wary of the cut-backs in service the increasing crime, and the total lack of sense of the City Council in looking forward. More crime and more development that is against the true spirit of this city.
