Ann Arbor Public Schools announce community Q&A with superintendent finalists

By Kyle Feldscher

The Ann Arbor school board will conduct a community forum for the public to question the three superintendent finalists Friday at Pioneer High School.

The question-and-answer session is scheduled for 6-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Pioneer cafeteria annex, district spokesperson Liz Margolis said Monday.

Community members will have the opportunity to submit questions to be asked of the candidates. Each question will be reviewed to ensure they are legal and pertinent by Ray & Associates, the search firm hired to find candidates for the superintendent job.

The school board has selected three finalists for the next superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools. The finalists are: Michael Munoz, chief academic officer of Des Moines Public Schools; Shelley Redinger, superintendent of Oregon Trails School District in Oregon and Patricia Green, superintendent of North Allegheny School District in Pennsylvania.

The superintendent position has been vacant since October, when former superintendent Todd Roberts departed for a job in North Carolina. Administrator Robert Allen has been serving as interim superintendent for the 16,500-student district, but did not apply for the permanent position.

Community members are also encouraged to attend the Board of Education’s final interview with the finalists, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Balas Administration Building conference room, 2555 State St.

Board members previously said a final decision on the next superintendent of AAPS could be expected after the final round of interviews.

What questions? Ann Arbor history and geography trivia? How many months do you plan to stay? Buying or renting? Do you plan to live within the district?

There will be one less candidate at the forum now, if this is correct: http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2011/022011/02282011/1298939409fls

Guess the firm that we're paying all this money didn't know we were her 2nd choice or perhaps just part of her tactics to get the other district to pay her more.

This is a very different process than last time when Todd Roberts was hired. How will the community input be formally taken into account in the interview process? Previously there was a formal interview committee with community members and parents where the candidates were scored and ranked. Will there be a process for that on Friday or with feedback from the community in some way? Or will it just be the board and search firm's decision?

Just wanted to note here: I reported last week this passage: "Green, superintendent of North Allegheny schools, will hold her final interview with board members at 9 a.m. March 5 before a series of community forums for each candidate to answer questions from community members, which are slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. The next day, Munoz, chief academic officer of Des Moines schools, and Redinger, superintendent of Oregon Trails schools, will have their final interviews with board members before trustees make the final decision on who will be the next superintendent of AAPS." This information was taken from the AAPS website and, as of this afternoon, was still present on the site. The information reported here today is official.
