Ann Arbor ranks among the most intelligent and educated cities in the country

By Chelsea Hoedl

Ann Arbor is ranked as the 15th most intelligent city in United States by Lumosity, a cognitive training site, according to Business Insider.

The top three smartest cities of the 479 ranked by the study are Stanford, Calif.; Princeton, N.J.; and Storrs Mansfield, Conn.. College towns were among the highest-scoring cities, Business Insider said.

Cities were ranked by residents’ average brain performance score in speed, attention, flexibility, memory and problem solving, according to Business Insider.

NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website also recently ranked Ann Arbor as the 17th most educated city in America. It was one of two Michigan cities to make the list. East Lansing was ranked 11th on the list.

NerdWallet’s ranking is based on the percentage of the population with a high school diploma, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and professional or doctoral degree.

When Ann Arbor "only" got a silver rating in the "bike rideability" surveys, they wanted to spend thousands of dollars on bike lanes. But now that we are "only" the 15th most intelligent city, what are we going to do? Maybe we should spend more on school administrators. Good thing there isn't a "best middle school swimmers' survey...yet

At 15th and 17th, Ann arbor has fallen short of two top-ten lists. It could recoup if all slower thinking and non-degreed folks left, but then "neither its pipes nor its theories would hold water" (John Gardner).

You wouldn't know it by the way people drive around here!

You also wouldn't know it from the decisions the mayor's office is making.......

That would be because most of the people driving around here are from somewhere else...

Nice ranking but I couldn't help but think that his must exclude City Council and the AAPS BOE.

I must rush off and re-read that right now. I'm guessing it will be every bit as gripping as it was the first time.

We're not that smart. We have allowed the majority of council members to build an underground parking structure for 50 Million and they almost got away with putting an ugly conference center on top of it. We also could of found a better way to fund a 50 Million dollar police court house building. Which again is pretty ugly next to our old fire station. Our smart people need to care more about our city that we live in. Let's get smart Ann Arbor and make sure we all get out and vote in the August primary for Jack Eaton (D) in the 4th ward, Stephen Kunselman (D) in the 3rd ward and in November Jane Lumm (Independent) in the second ward

You are right. Effective too. No sooner had I read the first sentence than I said 'Got to find me a Luminosity and get me some cognitive training.' Then my native intelligence kicked in, and I figured I'd better find out what the heck cognitive training is before I go get some....

Really. As long as gullible "newspapers" (or whatever this is) keep paying attention to these silly press releases, companies will keep putting them out.

These 'rankings' mean that intelligent people live in these cities, it doesn't mean that where you live causes you to be intelligent. Apparently, if you live in A2, consider yourself an outlier!
